The average age of people who took my questionnaire was 16 and under and 17-19 this could mainly be because this is the audience which mostly would have seen my questionnaire so my audience wasn’t as wide as it would have been if I was to share it to a wider variety. I think this might have impacted on the results I got in general as young people may not have experienced any type of mental illness, even though young people can still have these problems a big chunk of mental illnesses come from depression and anxiety, through my research I found out that these illnesses were common with adults mostly of 30+.

Age groups

The majority of my respondents were males, looking through the responses from men all of them said they had never had any sort of mental illness. I think this could be taken in two different ways, the respondents have never or they didn’t want to say yes which would be linked to exactly why I was doing my research to see if men shy away from talking about their problems and mental health. There were less females to take my questionnaire but out of the 11 which took it 5 are currently or previously suffering from a mental illness, this would be a huge difference on a much larger scale of people. I also think this shows that women are more likely to say if there is anything wrong as appose to men.

Gender

I considered sexual orientation for my campaign but from the results I got I don’t think it really applied to my research therefore this will have no impact on my campaign for now.

Awareness of help

From this piece from the questionnaire I found out that 6 people out of the 24 didn’t know where to go if they were concerned. This shows that it definitely needs more publicity on where people can find the right help for themselves because if my questionnaire was on a bigger scale then the numbers would show its a lot more than 6 people that have no idea. When I looked into the individual responses more it showed that 4 of these were in fact male, again drawing it back to the fact men are unaware or don’t like to talk to people about their problems.

People who have gone for help

I think the key thing with this for my campaign is that 5 people have only ever thought of going for help, this gives me chance to really push for people to get help and speak to the right people in my campaign as people don’t feel confident about going for help. As expected from the amount of females that said they have experienced a mental health problem all the people that said yes to going for help was female again addressing the need for men to be targeted for my campaign.

Do you suffer from a mental illness?

My research shows that 8 people feel they have experienced some sort of mental illness out of the 24 people that took my questionnaire all of these 8 came from females, I think this is showing more and more through my research that there isn't a lot of men that like to talk about this case. This is showing that women want help but I think for a campaign to specifically reach out to men would be a good cause to get men feeling more confident about this sensitive matter. My research did show men had the higher suicide rates than women by almost double showing that something needs to happen about the way male mental health is treat.

Mental health within family

Asking this question really helped with my research I think as I didn’t get much of a variety of ages taking my surveys but 12 people said that someone else In their family is affected and another 4 were unsure so I think this backs up that mental health is a issue for other age groups. Mental health being in their families didn’t seem to affect these people though as only a small amount were both affected. I think this gave me a different response to what I was expecting but it helped me in finding out that my campaign should be targeted at a very wide age range.

How do you think people perceive mental health?

People had very different opinions on this matter I think there is still stigma surrounding this case as people mentioned how some people think of it as like a scapegoat in life, when really it a serious matter if you suffer from it. When I looked into the responses males were very blunt about the matter creating the stigma around it.

How does the media perceive mental health?

I think that a lot of people see how the media sometimes perceives it but others aren't aware of the stigma which the media creates against and mental health issue. I think the government will pay more attention to other issues than others as they don’t see it as serious as so many people self diagnose themselves with these conditions in-correctly. I think the 3 response on here sums it up quite well that they also create this stigma of some illnesses make people bad people.
