Page 27: Personalisation in Practice - Support for young adults

Good and bad support…

Page 28: Personalisation in Practice - Support for young adults

Traditional took…

• Sense of purpose and identity

• Freedom and excitement of being young

• Imposed an older person’s life on a younger person

Modern gave…

• Hope and sense of identity

• Full and enjoyable life

• Made Heidi and her family proud

• Enjoys being a young person living in a vibrant City!

Page 29: Personalisation in Practice - Support for young adults

A truly independent person…

• Heidi has gone from needing 1-1 support, to none at all!

• We’re now redundant –she doesn’t need us

• We’re very proud of this…

So, lets have a chat and learn from Heidi!

Page 31: Personalisation in Practice - Support for young adults

“Why should having a disability mean that you are treated differently to any young person?”

Page 32: Personalisation in Practice - Support for young adults

“No one is too disabled, too complex or too challenging to live an ordinary life!”

Page 33: Personalisation in Practice - Support for young adults

Let’s get into some real detail…

Page 34: Personalisation in Practice - Support for young adults

Respect that I am young!

• Who I live with – People who are my age and I get on with (one-page profiles can help!)

• My house – It should reflect me and my tastes, not look bland and institutional!

• I’m an adult – I’m in control. Help me gain and use life skills – don’t make decisions for me.

• I want experiences – job, qualification, college, holidays….

• Promote my independence – It’s my house, not yours!

Page 35: Personalisation in Practice - Support for young adults

Bland, a touch institutional?

Contemporary, individual and young

Page 36: Personalisation in Practice - Support for young adults
Page 37: Personalisation in Practice - Support for young adults

Socially, how do we really ensure that young people enjoy the same lives as their peers?…

Page 38: Personalisation in Practice - Support for young adults

Being young is about having friends, fun and being connected!

• Spending time with people I like

• A young lifestyle – cool clothes, cool nights out, music, television programmes, brands….

• Helping me stay connected – help me find things that will excite me and give me new experiences!

Page 42: Personalisation in Practice - Support for young adults

Yes I may need support but respect my dignity and listen to me…

Page 43: Personalisation in Practice - Support for young adults

Support for a young person

• A young attitude – support by people who are young,

or young at heart!

• Believe in me – I need people who see my potential and encourage me to be my best

• Get connected – Can you help me meet people, stay connected and do exciting things?

• Give me space – e.g. When I’m at college, I don’t need you breathing down my neck!

• One Page-Profiles – To recruit my staff and help me find the right housemates

• Respect my dignity- Don’t embarrass me or make me feel different

• I’m a changing person – Let me make mistakes, express myself and do new things!

Page 45: Personalisation in Practice - Support for young adults

I’d much rather have a poster on my wall than my care plan!!!

Page 46: Personalisation in Practice - Support for young adults

Heidi’s hero, Jessie J, sings: “Be true to who you are!” …

Page 47: Personalisation in Practice - Support for young adults

Is your support true to the people you support?

Page 48: Personalisation in Practice - Support for young adults

Oh and a plea from us, please don’t sit there thinking…

That’s all very well, but not for really people with

really complex needs and profound disabilities

Page 49: Personalisation in Practice - Support for young adults

We passionately believe…

That no-one is too disabled or complex to lead a full life.
