Olympus Medical Products:
Bronchoscopes, Ultrasound,
Gastroscope
Last year Olympus released several new products, a trend they’ve continued in the first half of this year with the introduction offive new products.
BronchoscopesOlympus BronchoscopeIn 2013 Olympus released three new bronchoscopes and this year has added two new bronchoscopes to the EVIS EXERA III product line -the BF-P190 and BF-XP190 bronchoscopes.
The two scopes feature a slim outer diameter and are designed for Pulmonologists to perform minimally invasive bronchoscopy procedures in the periphery of the lung for a more proactive screening of lung cancer.
BronchoscopesThe BF-P190 features a 4.2mm outer diameter and is the smallest adult bronchoscope on the market. The BF-XP190 bronchoscope is an even smaller scope with a 3.1mm diameter designed for small anatomy.
Like those bronchoscopes released in 2013, the two new scopes offer a unique rotary function that can allow for increased maneuverability and reduction in hand fatigue.
BronchoscopesThe physician can now turn the insertion tube of the bronchoscope 120 degrees left and right without needing to rotate their hand or wrist.
The rotary function and the increased tip angulation on the new scopes is helpful in navigating smaller airways for diagnosing lung cancer and other diseases in the peripheral areas of the lung. Both scopes also feature full video “chip on tip” for a better image over previous generation hybrid scopes.
UltrasoundLast year Olympus introduced the Prosound F75 ultrasound processor in partnership with Hitachi Aloka Ltd. This year Olympus launched the EU-ME2 and the EU-ME2 Premier Plus Universal processors.
Since the processors are appropriate for gastroenterology, pulmonary and thoracic specialties, hospitals can realize cost savings through cross-departmental functionality.
UltrasoundThe image quality is identical between the EU-ME2 and the EU-ME2 Premier Plus models and brings better clarity to EUS and EBUS procedures.
Both processors feature improved imaging with B-mode which offers an improved ultrasound image compared to previous generation processors. B-mode also offers more accurate identification of tumors and tissue properties and boundaries.
UltrasoundBoth systems are backwards compatible with most Olympus Endobronchoial and Endoscopic Ultrasound scopes. This allows for a smooth transition when the time comes to upgrade.
UltrasoundThe Premier Plus model offers additional features:
• Video recording• Tissue harmonic echo mode -offers improved
resolution, improved signal-to-noise ratio and reduced imaging artifacts
• Elastrography- new technology that provides information about tissue properties
UltrasoundThe additional features of the Premier Plus model are geared towards Endoscopic Ultrasound customers while endobronchial customers, who do not need the additional ‘bells and whistles’, can find the same image quality with the EU-ME2 model.
UltrasoundBoth systems are the same size and fit compactly onto a video tower taking up less space which is important as video endoscopy and ultrasound procedures (like ERCP and EUS) are done hand in hand to reduce anesthesia for patients and the chances of a return visit.
GastroscopeThis year Olympus released its 4th gastroscope in the EVIS EXERA III line – the GIF-1TH190. This is a therapeutic gastroscope which has a large 3.7mm working channel.
This is advantageous since procedures physicians typically perform in the upper GI tract can require a larger channel.
GastroscopeIn the past diagnostic scopes were used to get the image they need, then the physician would switch to a therapeutic scope to perform the procedure. The GIF-1TH190 is the first single channel scope that has HD technology built into it with an image comparable to any Olympus gastroscope.
GastroscopeThe improved HD imaging with this new scope will allow physicians the larger working channel along with improved HD visualization for both screening and diagnosis.
This scope also features Narrow Band Imaging (NBI) for the visualization of capillary and mucosal structures which can result in fewer biopsies with the improved image quality.
GastroscopeThis scope features a 10mm outward diameter and a 3.7mm inner working channel with diagnostic capabilities in a therapeutic scope.
