He has leveraged economies of scale to provide affordablehealthcare.

He believes that the cost of healthcare can be reduced by50 percent in the next 5–10 years if hospitals adopt the ideaof economies of scale.

Dr. Shetty focused on the fact that 70% of India’s populationlives in villages but 70% of the country’s doctors lives incities. He therefore persuaded the Indian Space ResearchOrganization in Bangalore to provide satellite connectionsthat allowed NH to establish a telemedicine networkbetween city hospitals and villages.

In India, the dual pressures of poverty and a largepopulation make effective healthcare deliveryespecially challenging.

The large rural population of India means that accessto healthcare is low, with less than one doctor per1,000 people and 1.1 hospital beds per 1,000 people.

Increasing the health resources of the nation requiressubstantial investment. To achieve the target of twobeds per 1,000 population by 2025, an additional 1.75million beds are needed.
