From a Dentist’s Diary –7 Habits That Are Harmful
for Teeth
Smoking & Tobacco
Piercing Tongue & Lips
Candies & Fizzy Drinks
Bruxism
Frozen Ice Cubes
Your teeth are a set of gems that help you in chewing food and
enhance your smile, but are you taking enough dental care?
There is so much emphasis on taking care of teeth, which implies
abandoning bad habits that ruin our teeth. However, people,
knowingly and unknowingly, continue teeth wrecking habits and
destroy them. Are you one of them?
While brushing, flossing and oral care may protect our teeth and
gums from harmful effects of bad habits, it is very much important
to control these habits to sustain healthy teeth forever.
Here are some essential don’ts for healthy teeth:
Don’t Munch Frozen Ice Cubes:Many people test the strength of their teeth by munching
frozen cubes. However, while you do it, you are at risk of
cracking your teeth. Moreover, the coolness of ice can
irritate the soft tissue inside a tooth causing severe and
prolonged tooth ache. Ice cubes are harmful to munch
and, therefore, it is important to not chop them. Also,
you must abstain from icy and hot foods if your teeth are
sensitive to extremity.
Bruxism: Many people have the habit of grinding their teeth which, apparently, appears
harmless. Also called, Bruxism, this habit damages teeth gradually. One, usually, grinds
teeth in stress or while sleeping. Whilst, you may find it difficult to control, wear a
mouth guard at night, which will protect your teeth and help you in curbing this habit.
Say ‘No’ to Candies & Fizzy Drinks:
Intake of sugary things leads to teeth decay. Sugary food items, chocolates and candies
damage the enamel of your teeth and, thus, impair your teeth. Likewise, fizzy drinks
and sodas are also rich in sugar and do similar harm. In fact, sodas might do more harm
to teeth as they contain teeth decay acids and chemicals as well, which damage tooth
enamel more quickly.
Avoid Piercing Tongue & Lips
When you get your lips or tongue pierced, your
teeth come in contact with metallic nails and
rivets, which can chip a tooth. While they might
look cool and stylish, they can damage your
teeth badly. In addition, it can damage the gums
as well, and you may suffer from oral infections
and soreness in mouth.
Avoid Chewing Inedible Stuff:
Many chew a pen or pencil while thinking and doing any important task. Chewing a
pen or pencil could also crack your teeth and gums. Also, don’t use your teeth to open
plastic sachets and bottle caps. Using teeth as tools can also break your teeth and may
cause pain as well.
Quit Smoking & Tobacco:
While smoking can stain and discolor your teeth, it
causes teeth decay as well. Tobacco, on the other hand,
can cause mouth cancer. Would you still smoke and use
tobacco?
Constant Snacking & Eating Disorders:
Avoid snacking as it leaves food particles in your mouth for a long time.
Instead, eat those things that aren’t much starchy and sugary. Furthermore,
overeating or eating unnecessarily and frequently can also affect dental health
by eroding teeth.
Habits could be changed, and since teeth are very important to chew food,
they must be strong, unbroken and healthy. However, if you have any dental
issue or need more guidance on teeth and oral care, consult your dentist.
