A wound occurs when the integrity of any tissue is compromised (e.g. skin breaks , burns). A wound may be caused by an act like falling. Usually bleeding occurs but in very minimal amounts.
- Abrasion : Scrape - Incision : clean cut
- Laceration : Jagged cut

1. Wear gloves
1. Wash the wound gently with soap and water
2. Make sure no foreign objects are
in the wound
1. Cover with clean bandage

If large, deep, or gaping, pull edges together with “ butterfly” tape
Control bleeding
Do not clean exposed tissue of major wounds
as tissue damage may increase.
Cover with bandage pressure or sterile dressing.
Check for current tetanus immunization.
Contact responsible personnel for need of stitches, tetanus booster, infection control etc..

Cover the wound with sterile gauze and
press firmly against the wound (if dressing
became soaked with blood, don’t remove it but add additional dressing over).
ELEVATE injured area above the level
of the heart if possible.
Cover gauze with roller bandage to maintain pressure.
Tourniquet is used as last resort
if not controllable.

If wound is gaping, it may need stitches
so contact parents and school authority.
If bleeding is uncontrolled and signs of shock are present (dizziness, blueness, sweating, clammy face, fainting) , call emergency medical service, school authority and parents.

If amputation is the case, call Emergency medical service

1. Place detached part in plastic bag.
2. Tie bag and put bag in container of ice water.
3. Send bag to hospital with student.
4. Do not put amputated part directly on ice.
5. Contact school authority and parents.

Asthma is a disease that occurs when small air passages constricts making breathing difficult.
Some triggers for asthma include:
Viral infection
Tobacco smoke
Exercise
Perfumes, strong odors
Dust
Cold air
Allergies

Rapid breathing
Tightness in chest
Excessive coughing
Having to take a breath between words
Wheezing high pitched sound during exhaling
Increased use of stomach and chest muscles
Flaring (widening of nostrils)
Blueness of lips, tongue or nail beds

If available refer to student’s asthma emergency care plan. Remember peak flow meter if available.
If the student have approved medication,
administer them as directed.
If no approved medication, encourage student to sit quietly, breath slowly and deeply through nose and out of mouth.
If the symptoms are getting worse, contact school authority, parents and emergency medical services.

Allergy is hypersensitive reaction to foreign substances
(antigens), that in similar amounts and circumstances are
harmless to other individuals .

Mild:
o Red itchy eyes
o Itchy, sneezing, runny nose
o Several hives, rash on one part of the body
Severe:
o Hives all over the body
o Weakness
o Seizures
o Dizziness
o Loss of consciousness
o Difficulty breathing
o Flushed face
o Paleness
o Confusion
o Blueness around eyes, mouth,
o Drooling

Refer to student allergy emergency care plan if available.
Administer approved medication which may contain epinephrine.
If mild watch student for delayed reaction for up to 2 hrs. If child is unable to participate in school activities, contact school authority and parents.
If Severe call emergency medical services,
school authority, parents.
If child stops breathing ,give rescue breath.

Bites from the following animals can carry Rabies & may need medical attention:
Dog - Opossum
Raccoon - Coyote
Bat - Skunk
Fox - Cat

Wear disposable gloves Wash the bite area with soap and water. If student is bleeding, press firmly with a clean dressing. If NOT,
hold under running water for 2-3 min. Check student immunization records for tetanus. If the bite is from an animal “snake” hold the bitten area still, below the heart level, and contact emergency services school authority, & parents. Report bite to proper authorities so the animal can be caught and
watched for rabies. If the bite is from a human, the skin is broken, contact school
authority and parents, urge immediate medical care. Parents of the student who was bitten, and student who was biting
should be informed since they may have been exposed to blood from another student.
