BE-ATI Curriculum in the Schools: We just wrapped up our first full year of the Be-Above the Influence curriculum at APS High Schools. Patricia Rael of Rael Training and Consulting and Frank Magourilos of Prevention Works Consulting developed an evidence-based life skills curriculum for High and Middle School youth. The curriculum is very interactive with many learning and fun student activities that expose the effects alcohol has on the youths’ developing brain and the rest of their organs. The curriculum augments the BE-ATI Campaign and further influences the main goal of reducing underage drinking in Bernalillo County. There is also a pre and post instrument that the youth complete for evaluation purposes. With the help and support of all the APS Crossroads Counselors we were able to deliver the BE-ATI Curriculum to over 2,400 High School students. Next school year we will be offering the curriculum to Middle Schools in Bernalillo County. There is already a waiting list. SafeTeen New Mexico is a youth driven non-profit organization. We partner with both public and private entities to fund and create programs that educate teens, parents, educators and community leaders about critical issues facing youth. Our programs include both In-School Assemblies as well as broadcast based Social Marketing Campaigns. Programs have included: distracted driving, underage drinking, drug abuse, date violence, body image, addiction, suicide and many others. SafeTeen’s vision is to create awareness in order to facilitate healthy decision making. Students, parents, community leaders and schools work with SafeTeen to create our programs. The SafeTeen organization exists to help youth make healthy decisions and prevent dangerous behavior. Since 2001 the SafeTeen Social Marketing Campaigns and In-School Issue Awareness programs have reached well over five million people. We have worked with schools to create over one hundred customized assemblies, and have produced numerous Emmy© Award winning documentaries that have been broadcast in primetime on the PBS, CBS, NBC and ABC local network affiliates.
