Today is World AIDS Day. It marks an internationally recognised event aimed at raising awareness about HIV and AIDS around the world. Across the globe, the event is commemorated in a multitude of ways, collectively symbolised by the wearing of red ribbons, a sign of support for those living with HIV.

AIDS was first recognised in 1981 in the US

Genetic research indicates that HIV originated in Africa during the late 1800s and is thought to have arrivedinto the Western Hemisphere from Haiti in the late 1960s.

Since then the prevalence of AIDS has increaseddramatically...

33.4 million people are living with HIV worldwide

2.1 million are children under 15

There were 2.7 million new cases of HIV in 2008

The world currently possesses the means to prevent new HIV infections, reduce HIV-related illness and death, and mitigate the epidemic’s harmful effects on households, communities, and societies.

Yet, there is no annual research update on the subject andthe National Institutes of Health, perhaps the best hope of curing AIDS, has been underfunded for almost a decade.

A cure for AIDS could save the lives of millions of people around the world. Too many lives have been lost and devastated already.
