Script

The play that was chosen was Wintertime. Mainly chosen because I, and members of the group liked the Winter and the way it made people feel. There seems to be no clear main character that is discernable from the beginning of the play, but Maria will take that role as she cause the most conflict throughout the play. The story seems to move along fine and the climax is reached in a timely manner.

Spine – The Value of Life

The spine that will be used throughout the play will be the “value of life”. Each character continually fights and has arguments throughout the first act. They are constantly at each other’s throats insulting each other and taking for granted as well as being condescending about the relationships that were formed, sometimes out of jealousy or because of their pasts. In the end though, they all have an appreciation for life because of what Maria and Hilda do. They all start appreciating the good aspects of their relationships, and even the darker sides of each other’s pasts because they realize that life is important.

Theme

The themes of the play are love, and tying in with the spine: the value of life. Throughout the play there resonates love. From the troubles that Francois has caused in his past in being a pig, to the new relationships that were forming in Johnathan and Ariel. The first act is mainly love and the turmoil between all the couples in the house. The second act though is when they all come together and love each other when they realize the second theme, the value of life.

Style – Modernistic and Casual

The style of the play will be modernistic and casual. This seems to be during modern times, so they would have things like cell phones and the house will be somewhat modern. Everyone came to the house for alone time, to be with their partners, so the atmosphere will be fairly casual. The clothing will be loose and nothing too fancy, except for maybe Johnathan and Ariel because he planned on proposing. The set will be selective realism. Possibly the fireplace will be real and be brighter or dimmer depending on the mood of the current scene. Everything else is pretty standard such as the couches and lamps.

Directorial Concept

The directorial concept will try and keep close to the heart of the play, to try and help enhance what goes on. It would be like the doors that open and close in the relationships of a person’s life. To symbolize this, the door to the house could be a very prominent part of the set, probably right in the middle. As the relationships break and form from couple to couple, they could symbolically open and close the door. Everything else will be the same, such as the winter time setting and cozy house.
