Why Am I Seeing Black Spots In My Eyes?Seeing black spots should not be a cause for concern in most cases. Black spots are also knownas eye floaters. Other eye floaters include squiggles, cobwebs, hair-like lines and rings. They areusually benign and they are caused by the accumulation of collagen in the vitreous humor, in theback of the eye. There are tiny little strands of collagen which can crystallize and start floating inthe vitreous liquid, obstructing the light coming to the retina. This is a normal occurrence withage and it is most commonly experienced after the age of fifty, but people with near-sightednesscan be affected by eye floaters as well.

There are some cases, though, in which you should seek immediateattention. If the floaters are accompanied by flashing lights, eye pain orloss of vision, then the underlying condition could be serious. A retinal tearcan cause flashing lights to be seen in one eye and it could lead topermanent loss of vision. Depending on where the tear starts, whether it isat the bottom or at the top of the retina, you have anywhere from a fewweeks to less than 24 hours before it is irreversible. Another worrying sign

is a sudden onset of a lot of eye floaters, where cobwebs or a very large floater pops up.

The less severe cases of eye floaters are permanent. They usually get better with time, but thereare surgical options reserved for when the floaters become too numerous and start to block thevision. These options are laser removal and vitrectomy. With the laser removal, a doctor uses alaser to destroy the collagen accumulations. The procedure is still considered experimental, andmany doctors still see it as risky. The vitrectomy is a procedure in which the vitreous gel isreplaced with a sterile saline solution, but in this case future eye floaters are not prevented andthere is a very high risk of retinal tear or detachment.

So seeing black spots is not a cause for concern. They are nothing more than a nuisance in mostcases, and luckily it is a nuisance that usually doesn’t last too long. It is also a condition thattends to become less pronounced with time. But if you experience seeing black spots or eyefloaters at the same time as other symptoms, contact a medic immediately and have your eyeschecked.
