What is Xerostomia?

Xerostomia is the most common clinical manifestation of salivary dysfunction, involving a reduction or absence of salivary secretion.

It has a severe impact on quality of life, making it hard to carry out basic oral functions like chewing, swallowing and phonation, among others.

It affects: Soft tissues: desiccation, burning, irritation, mucositis, gingivitis, etc.Hard tissues: caries, dental sensitivity, etc.

IRREVERSIBLE XEROSTOMIA

Salivary glands produce NO saliva (Sjögren’s Syndrome, radiotherapy treatment).

Diabetes and other systemic diseases

Unbalanced diet

People undergoing radiotherapy

Tobacco and alcohol intake
