Ultrasound GuidedRegional Anesthesia:
Technology and Techniques
February 28 – March 2, 2014Emory University School of Medicine
Atlanta, Georgia
General infoDESCRIPTIONWith technological advances in ultrasound imaging, clinicians need to expand their knowledge and enhance skills to improve competency and professional practice in Anesthesiology. Ultrasound imaging has been shown to offer excellent guidance for difficult venous access and nerve identification. Traditional techniques do not account for human anatomical variations or enable the physician to see the area of interest. This course will enable anesthesiologists to perform regional anesthetic procedures with greater confidence in accuracy and precision.
LEARNER OBJECTIVESAt the completion of the course, you will be able to:
n Describe and perform ultrasound technique for nerve localization and visualization of local anesthetic spread;
n Demonstrate skill in needle tip placement using ultra sound guidance;
n Describe and understand the uses of ultrasound guidance for continuous catheter insertion for prolonged peripheral nerve blockade;
n Explain the uses of ultrasound guidance for continuous catheter insertion for prolonged peripheral nerve blockade;
n Demonstrate skill in ultrasound guided joint injection and perispinal injections.
n Demonstrate competency in equipment operations and identification of major nerves including brachial plexus, femoral, sciatic nerves and other peripheral nerves.
This program is designed to give physicians and other healthcare professionals new knowledge to advance the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of disease in the population. It is also designed to improve physician performance to better provide patient care.
Anesthesiology is a medical specialty which requires that physicians maintain license certification. ACGME Maintenance of Certification core competencies for quality patient care include: Patient Care, Medical Knowledge, Interpersonal and Communica-tion Skills, Professionalism, Systems-based Practice, Practice-based Learning and Improvement. This course is designed to meet the educational needs of a national audience of anesthesiologists and interventional specialists.
