Sharing his enthusiasm for fun and fitness—meet Ray Olson

Celebrating in your new home

Enjoying a taste of Italy

Located at 1616 E 32nd Court, this 1,906 square foot home offers two bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a den. Call today for a tour and to learn more about the {FULL} Life at Touchmark.

Guests and residents took their taste buds around the world during the community’s recent Armchair Traveler: Tour of Italian Food. Executive Chef Steven Mitchell, who traveled to Italy in early April, shared some of the cuisine and cooking nuances he experienced. The group of 45-plus people also heard about the places he visited and enjoyed an authentic Italian dinner he prepared.

the festivities. “This battery of fitness tests for those over 60 really helps people gauge their fitness level and compares it to their peers,” explains Lori.

After taking the test, Ray realized that he had lost a lot of muscle strength and endurance. He joined Touchmark in December and took advantage of the fitness offerings right away.

“I liked what I saw when I visited Touchmark,” says Ray. “I knew I would be able to meet new people and get the exercises I needed to get back in shape—which is just what I’m doing and loving.”

Honoring those who have served

Touchmark celebrated veterans during a Memorial Day service that returned to the holiday’s roots, which was originally called Decoration Day. Team members read several dozen names of veterans and rang a bell in their honor while placing a name tag for each on The Tree of Remembrance. In addition to the decorated tree, the service included a moment of silence, the singing of God Bless America, and the reading of The Gettysburg Address.

BRAIN BUILDERS

The right to question authority “In these chaotic times we must move from cognitive dissonance to inspirational dissonance by learning to live more deeply in the questions, and to ask new ones.”

– Anne Dosher, Elder of the Ashland Institute and International Women’s Dialogue

The headlines alone are enough to baffle us. Why would someone shoot and kill children and their teachers? How does a citizen feel empowered by sharing information that could

jeopardize the well-being of others? “Why, why, why?” No one knows the answers, and some debate the questions.

The question seems to be, “Does the right to be heard override the rights of others to be safe?” That challenge lies with the Supreme Court, the Canadian Ministries, and leaders in democratic countries around the world. In reality, it is important to be heard but not necessary to be right. That is the premise of the constitution, the Bill of Rights, the Canadian provincial governance, and other democratic bodies.

As we celebrate Canada Day July 1 and the Fourth of July in the USA, we set aside personal preferences and biases and focus on the lives dedicated to freedom and the rights we all

hold dear.

In my interviews with Touchmark residents, I often pause and reflect on the wisdom, life experience, patriotism, and thoughtful observations they share. In the Lifelong Learning, Civic Engagement, and Legacy project offerings of Touchmark’s Full Life Wellness & Life Enrichment Program, there are venues and opportunities for residents to participate and share their knowledge and opinions.

To contribute and participate in the Full Life’s Lifelong Learning programs, contact Life Enrichment/Wellness Director Betty Doerschlag. Support learning over the life span—whether there is universal agreement or not.

The Marching Thunderbirds from Sacajawea Middle School took a turn around the community’s front drive, giving residents a mini parade performance.
