“is a ritual, a ceremony
reminding us that the
city belongs to people
more than cars”– Enrique Penalosa,
former Mayor Bogota
Community Benefits
– Sunday Streets events build community,
cultural identify and social engagement.
– Provides people with opportunities for new
social interactions and to view their city from a
different perspective
– There is an enormous amount of interaction
between participants of all ages, incomes,
occupations, and backgrounds.
Environmental Benefits
– Sunday Streets provides an environmental benefit by temporarily removing cars from the road. The more times the event is held, the greater the environmental benefit
– Most open streets programs directly encourage residents to replace car usage with walking, cycling and public transport use.
– It is common for local environmental organisations to participate in the event. Their taking part helps raise awareness in the community about the connections between improving the natural and built environment, the local economy, and public health.

the next day announced they were going to do
it in New York City. A few months later it was
