INTRODUCTION Spirulina is a photosynthesizing

cyanobacteria (blue-green algae). It grows vigorously in strong sunshine

under high temperatures and highly alkaline conditions (pH 10-12). Unicellular It contains 50-70 percent protein also

contains all essential amino acids

Spirulina has an 8-10 percent photosynthetic conversion rate (land plants have about a 3 percent conversion rate)

NUTRITIONAL VALUE Spirulina is a food source that consists of

more than 50-70% protein. carbohydrates: 15-25% lipids: 6-13% nucleic acids: 4.2-6% It has the highest known source of beta

carotene. (25 times more than raw carrots)

Spirulina has more vitamin B12 than any other known source.

It contains the richest food source of gamma linolenic acid (GLA). (GLA is the precursor to body's important hormone prostaglandin)

Spirulina is richest source of chlorophyll. Spirulina has a number of natural

antioxidants like beta-carotene, vitamin E, vitamin B1, B5, & B6, zinc, manganese, copper and selenium & amino acid methionine.

SPIRULINA VS. OTHER FOODS

180% more calcium than whole milk 670% more protein than tofu 3100% more beta carotene than carrots 5100% more iron than spinach More antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity in

3 g of Spirulina than in five servings of fruits and vegetables.

AGE-RELATED MACULAR DEGENERATION (ARMD)

ARMD is the leading cause of blindness in the developed world.

Fovea has the highest visual acuity. ARMD reduces the acute vision of fovea . The macular membranes of human retina contain principally two polar carotenoid pigments- lutein and zeaxanthin .

Macular pigment protects against ARMD. Macular pigment density can be augmented through dietary modification.

Spirulina provides 3750 – 6000 mcg of zeaxanthin per serving size of 3 g. There is no RDA for lutein and zeaxanthin.

Type 2 Diabetes Inflammatory cytokines like TNFα, IL-6

are elevated and levels of anti-inflammatory protein- adiponectin are reduced in insulin resistance.

Spirulina reduce serum triglycerides and also reduced inflammatory response by reducing inflammatory cytokines IL-6 and TNF-α and increasing adiponectin.

So that Spirulina can be used as a functional food to manage Type 2 Diabetes.

HYPERTENSION C- phycocyanin, one of the constituents

of Spirulina is a selective inhibitor of cyclooxygenase 2. This mechanism of action may inhibit the synthesis/release of cyclooxygenase-dependent vasoconstrictor metabolite of arachidonic acid and induce vasodialation.

Spirulina supplementation reduced both systolic and diastolic blood pressure in subjects .

Lowers Blood Pressure Phycocyanin is a pigment found in the

spirulina that scientists have discovered possesses antihypertensive effects (it lowers blood pressure). Japanese researchers claim that this is because consuming the blue-green algae reverses endothelial dysfunction in metabolic syndrome.

CANCER A number of animal and test tube

studies suggest that spirulina increases production of antibodies, infection-fighting proteins, and other cells that improve immunity and help ward off infection and chronic illnesses such as cancer.

Spirulina is also rich in tetrapyrrolic compounds closely related to bilirubin molecule, a potent antioxidant and anti-proliferative agent.

WEIGHT LOSS Diets high in nutrient-dense protein-rich foods

like spirulina promote weight loss and low-fat stores through a variety of mechanisms. Because it takes more energy to metabolize, for example, eating protein helps maintain lean tissue and contributes to fat burning.

It can also curb hunger and overweight people seem to benefit the most. To maximize this benefit, try eating your high protein spirulina in the morning or during midday instead of at night.

NUTRITIONAL SUPPLEMENT Spirulina is rich in high quality protein,

vitamins, minerals and many biologically active substances. Its cell wall consists of polysaccharides which has a digestibility of 86% and could be easily absorbed by the human body. There are different categories of spirulina food where pills and capsules made from dry spirulina are important. Spirulina increase the lungs capacity of s athletes.
