Shiatsu massage
Shiatsu: Japanese from shi, meaning finger, and atsu, meaning pressure) is a traditional hands-on therapy originating in Japan. There is no scientific evidence proving that shiatsu can treat any disease. The Japanese shiatsu massage is a way of relaxation, but in its main theory shiatsu it is a holistic bodywork. Shiatsu massage uses acupressure techniques which is applied with hands, thumbs, elbows and knees.
Shiatsu Acupressure
The difference between acupuncture and acupressure is that in the first case the practitioner uses very thin needles but in the case of acupressure the therapist uses deep tissue pressure on the twelve body meridians.
The pressure on the points is made slowly and soft but deep and the patient may feel a little pain. The therapist uses all his body to create the pressure on the meridians. To apply shiatsu the patient has to change his positions lying on the back, on his stomach and on the two sides. This gives to the therapist the possibility to workout each energetic point of the meridians.
Zen shiatsu
Was introduced firstly by Shizuto Masunaga. Zen is a way of meditation. Master Masunaga believed that a shiatsu therapist should practice zen meditation. Zen helps to achieve harmony of body and mind and it helps to understand the chi behavior inside the body and the concept of shiatsu meridians and their affects upon the general health of the patient. Meridians chart describes the whole systems of the body as a unique energy system where the chi flows. Shiatsu massage helps to maintain the harmony of the shiatsu meridians system.
Zen Shiatsu Zen Shiatsu has its roots in Buddhism meditation practices. It
is a new concept of shiatsu massage. Zen shiatsu uses shiatsu acupressure points (tsubo) and shiatsu meridians. What is special about zen shiatsu? is that before starting a shiatsu massage the therapist will do a diagnose to find out which of the meridians have blocked points.
Zen shiatsu
Other master Namikoshi taught shiatsu massage using acupressure points along the meridians using thumbs and hands while zen shiatsu therapy uses also knees, elbows and feet.
Shiatsu Massage Benefits
Skin:Shiatsu massages, or
acupressure, help stimulate circulation in the capillaries of the skin's soft tissues. The massage also serves to stimulate the secretion of the sebaceous glands and keeps skin moist and smooth.
PregnancyShiatsu can be used during pregnancy to help
alleviate all the sore muscles that come along with pregnancy, and then some.
While Shiatsu is safe during pregnancy, that doesn't mean that you should just start practicing the massage therapy without some education. Many of the pressure points that are used in Shiatsu actually stimulate the uterus. During the first three months of pregnancy, using improper Shiatsu techniques can actually induce a miscarriage, so it's important that you, or your Shiatsu therapist know what you are doing or the consequences can be quite catastrophic. It can induce labor in women who are overdue and help ease morning sickness and swelling often caused by pregnancy.
Rheumatoid Arthritis and Muscle Pain:
Shiatsu and acupressure massages can help alleviate the symptoms caused by arthritis.
Shiatsu applied to the hands and feet are most effective when suffering from arthritis. Pressure from the massage can also be applied directly to any area affected by Rheumatoid arthritis.
Migraine Headaches:Shiatsu massages helps aid
migraines by relaxing the body and increasing blood flow and circulation throughout the body.
Circulatory and Digestive System:
Shiatsu massages are also found to help aid the circulatory and digestive system. A gently massage helps improve circulation and cellular nutrition throughout the body. A massage also benefits the digestive system allowing food to digest more easily and aids in the elimination of waste products.
