PURPOSE

Symptom control

Electrolyte replacement by administering medications

subcutaneously

Maintain medication – requires physicians order

Maintain Oral fluids

EQUIPMENT INVOLVED

• HDC solution as ordered

• Needle

• IV administration set

• IV pole and infusion pump

• Tape

• Transparent dressing

• Alcohol

SITES TO INJECT NEEDLE

• Upper chest

• Abdomen

• Upper thigh

• Scapular

INSERTION GUIDELINES

1. Cleanse site with alcohol

2. Use 24-gauge catheter needle and insert to subcutaneous space at an

20 degree – 45 degree angle into the tissue**

3. Clamp tubing and replace the existing cap with a luer activated valve

4. Remove clamp

• 75ml/hr

• 60ml/hr

• Hang it for only 24 hours

• ~1440ml of solution for patient
