Different types of human malaria are caused by a parasite of the Plasmodium species:

• Plasmodium falciparum (Pf) has the most serious effects and commonly leads to death. It is the predominant form in Africa.

• Plasmodium vivax is also a common form of malaria. It can cause recurring bouts of malaria but is rarely fatal. Symptoms can be experienced even 2 years after your stay in a high malaria risk country. It is the predominant form in Africa.

• Other forms of the disease known as P. malariae, P. ovale as well as other exceptional forms also exist.

The typical symptoms of malaria include:

Fever ChillsSweating WeaknessAches and pains Abdominal painsDiarrhea Vomiting

These symptoms are called “non specific” because they are

not exclusively caused by malaria. They are similar to those of

the flu. Even so, if you experience these symptoms in the 8

weeks following your recent stay in a high falciparum malaria-

risk country, ALWAYS THINK MALARIA FIRST, use your

Malaria Survival Kit and obtain medical help as soon as

possible.

If you develop fever, chills, nausea, and abdominal pains (typical symptoms of malaria)

1.Check your body temperature using the enclosed forehead thermometer and record the results.

2.Immediately take 4 tablets of the enclosed medication (Coartem/Riamet). Warning! Coartem/Riamet will not prevent malaria. This is not a preventive medication.

3.Go to the nearest recommended medical facility with this Malaria Survival Kit. If you cannot consult a doctor within 6 hours perform the diagnostic test yourself and report the findings to a doctor as soon as possible.

4.Unless the doctor rules out malaria or another disease is positively diagnosed, take the Coartem/Riamet contained in this kit for the full three (3) days, even if the rapid tests are negative. P. vivax requires additional follow-up treatment which must be prescribed by a doctor.

How to perform a malaria diagnostic test

Disinfect the side of any finger using adisinfectant wipe contained in the kit.

The 3rd or 4th finger is ideal.

lancet firmly to the side of the finger.2. Press on the trigger to release the

needle. The finger prick is almost painless. The lancet can only be used once as the needle automatically retracts after use.

TEST VALIDITYReading the results

The absence of a pink line in the “Control” area indicates that the test is not working correctly.

If the diagnostic test is invalid, it must be discarded and a new test performed using another drop of blood, another diagnostic test strip and another bottle of buffer liquid.

Page 19: Msk Multiple Species Training

Only one pink line appears at the level of the Control zone. This confirms that your test is valid AND that you do not have Malaria.

Start or continue to take the Coartem/Riamet contained in the kit. See page “How to take curative malaria medication”. P. falciparum kills if left untreated.

Other species, and in particular P. vivax, require additional follow-up treatment which must be prescribed by a doctor.

* Multi infection is possible. Treat the P. falciparum accordingly and seek medical attention for follow up.

medication If two out of three of the statements below are true you should start taking curative malaria medication immediately:

1 - You have been in a malaria country within the last 8 weeks and have one or more of the symptoms of malaria described in the chapter “The symptoms of malaria”.

2 - You are more than 6 hours from a doctor or medical facility.

3 - You performed a multi-malaria test contained in the Malaria Survival kit and a diagnostic test strip was positive for malaria.

medication 1-IMMEDIATELY TAKE 4 TABLETS with food or a glass of milk.

2-TAKE 4 MORE TABLETS 8 HOURS LATER.

3-CONTINUE TAKING 4 TABLETS morning and evening for a total of three days. The entire curative treatment requires 24 tablets taken over a 3 day period. In the event of vomiting within one hour of administration, another dose of 4 tablets should be taken and your doctor informed of the incident.

Do not stop taking Coartem/Riamet even if you feel better and the symptoms have disappeared. Any treatment that is started MUST be completed.

Side effects with Coartem/Riamet are rare and minor (nausea, heartburn). Coartem has not been officially approved for administration to pregnant women. Although Coartem/Riamet is highly effective in curing acute, uncomplicated malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum in areas of multi-drug resistance, the possibility of drug failure is always possible.

FOR CHILDREN: Coartem/Riamet dosage must be adapted to a child’s weight. Contact a doctor for more information.

WARNING! Do not take Coartem/Riamet if you have no malaria symptoms. This is not a preventive medication against malaria.
