Magazine Name & Analysis

Alt Pop

• “Alt Pop” is short for alternative pop. As this is the genre of magazine I have chosen to create my magazine on, I felt it was appropriate. I shortened “alternative” to “alt” because it can easily fit in with the worlds culture, as the world is always developing, and everyone seems to be living at a fast pace of life and don’t have time to read a full word. Finally I believe that using the word Alt could branch out onto a bigger target market, such as the younger generation that often use computers. Alt is a key on a computer keyboard, so including this in the title of my masthead would give a certain target audience something that they would be able to recognise quickly.

The Smiths

• I took inspiration from the rock magazine “The Rolling Stones”. The Rolling Stones have a rock magazine named after them because they were one of the most iconic rock bands to ever play the world music. Likewise I believe that The Smiths were one of, if not the, most iconic and influential Indie-Pop bands in the music industry. If I did choose to have The Smiths as my magazine name, it would be instantly recognisable for a huge population, as their name is a household name across many generation. As The Smiths basically created their own genre of music, it would never become unpopular and so would be recognisable for many years to come.

Die In Pop

• As my chosen genre of music I am creating a magazine on is “Indie Pop” I thought that there could be a few anagrams that could potentially make a good magazine name. I came up with “Die In Pop”. If Die In Pop was a magazine then it could refer to readers being loyal to that type of music genre, and that they would listen to it until they died. It could also could be referring to the artists of the genre, who dedicate the majority of their life to creating music for the world, meaning that they give their life to creating the music they do and some only stop when they die, so they die in pop.

Identity

• I chose to use identity for my possible magazine names after looking in an online thesauruses. I looked up the word “individuality” and came across identity and I immediately liked the sound of it because if gives a hint of mystery and unknowing to the magazine. Another reason why I like this name is because it is able to create a personal relationship between the reader and the magazine as the reader could create the thought that the magazine is a part of their identity, as it is about the music they like.
