The Latest in LASIK Technology
Atlanta Vision Institute
What is LASIK?
LASIK stands for Laser-Assisted In-Situ Keratomileusis.
(It’s a form of refractive eye surgery.)
Who is LASIK for?
LASIK is the most commonly performed laser eye surgery to treat:
Nearsightedness (Myopia)
Farsightedness (Hyperopia)
Astigmatism
How Does LASIK Work?
LASIK eye surgery reshapes the cornea.
This better allows light that enters the eye to be properly focused on the retina.
Better Focus = Better Vision
The LASIK Procedure
First, a thin “flap” is created in the cornea. This can be done with a thin blade called a microkeratome, or with an advanced laser called a femtosecond laser.
Then, the flap is gently lifted so the surgeon can access the cornea’s middle layer, called the stroma. The cornea is reshaped by removing tissue with an excimer laser that uses an ultraviolet (UV) laser light beam.
LASIK eye surgery is performed in two parts:

Bladeless LASIK
Bladeless LASIK is now possible with a procedure called IntraLASIK which uses an advanced IntraLase
femotosecond laser.
The advanced femtosecond laser has eliminated the need to create corneal flaps using a bladed
microkeratome.
The Atlanta Vision Institute has the most advanced femtosecond laser: the 5th generation IntraLase iFSTM
Advanced Femtosecond Laser.
Benefits of Bladefree LASIK
It’s faster
It’s safer
It’s more precise
Added benefits for patients with astigmatism
The advanced femtosecond laser creates quick bursts of energy pulses that precisely target tissue without damaging surrounding areas.
The Newest Excimer Laser
The Atlanta Vision Institute recently acquired the most advanced excimer laser in the country: the Wavelight® EX500 Excimer Laser from Alcon Surgical.
About WaveLight® EX500
The laser is the latest approved by the FDA
It is the only laser to operate at 500 Hz
Average treatment time is 1.4 seconds per diopter
Total average treatment time is less than 8 seconds
Ergonomic design
Multi-dimensional eye tracker
Built-in non-contact online pachymetry
Two Lasers Together
The Atlanta Vision Institute is the first LASIK surgery center in the state to offer this combination of lasers.
When used together, surgical time has been reduced 75% versus five years ago
Total laser time is now less than 20 seconds
Innovations reduce corneal dehydration, flap shrinkage and patient fixation fatigue
Meet the Doctor
Dr. Farooq Ashraf, MD, FACS, is the medical director of the Atlanta Vision Institute.
He is a board-certified ophthalmologist specializing in corneal and refractive surgery. He offers diagnostic testing, bifocal correction, cataract surgery and corneal transplants.
He is also the medical director of the Atlanta Vision Clinic in Dubai, UAE. He has personally performed over 40,000 LASIK procedures.
