EXPERIMENT - EQUIPMENT

This “experiment” is meant to introduce you to a number of skills that are essential to success in the laboratory.

Need to know some of the common equipment you are going to use in Biochemistry

TEST TUBE HOLDER

Use test tube holder for wherever heating required

MICROPIPETTE

Used to measure and transfer small volumes of liquids accurately and precisely. For volumes less than 1ml

MICROPEPITTE

Different sizes of micropipette

MICROPIPETTE RULES

• Never adjust the volume beyond the range of the micropipette• Never force the volume adjustor dial.• Do not drop pipette• Always use a smooth motion when using the pipette. • Always choose to appropriate size pipette for the

volume you are measuring. • Always dispose of tips in appropriate waste containing.

Never leave tips in glassware.

MICROPIPETTE TIPS• All pipette use

disposable tips (do not pipet liquids without using the appropriate tip, because this will contaminate the pipette and may damage it)

WATER BATH

A water bath is a device that maintains water at a constant temperature.

CENTRIFUGES

A centrifuge is a laboratory device that is used for the separation of fluids, gas or liquid, based on density.
