You will feel the lower back muscles contract (with the other hand) when you contract your abs and buttocks. Activities of Daily Living Fun Facts (About The Olympics) The first modern Olympic Games were held in the sum- mer in 1896 in Athens, Greece. Host Greece won the most medals (47). The United States has won more medals (2,189) at the Summer Games than any other country. The five Olympic rings represent the five major regions of the world – Africa, the Americas, Asia, Europe and Oceana, and every national flag in the world includes one of the five colors, which are (from left to right) blue, yellow, black, green, and red. The extra 0.2 miles at the end of a marathon was originated at the Olympics. In 1908, the Olympics were being held in London and the organizers tacked on another 385 yards to the already established 26-mile run to make sure the Royal Family could properly see the finish line. BODY PREPARATION AND POSITIONING 1. Sternum Up- Keeping the sternum up automatically sets the body into good posture and maintains: a. Neutral Spine: Maintaining good spinal alignment decreases the stress placed on the spine and discs. b. He who is not courageous enough to take risks will

accomplish nothing in life.– Muhammad Ali

THE “ALTERNATIVES” OF CORPORATE WELLNESSSome current wellness program pillars outlined above are flawed. Too many employers take useless biometric numbers as the guideline to health and success. The problem is, blood markers are NOT reliable enough to be indicative for stroke or cardiac events. The second issue is companies often give the blood results without designing a program for change. So how do we get back to this idea that wellness should be done for employees, not to them? Here are some of our what-ifs that became proven, measurable methods that work• What if the five-minute walk break throughout the day was supported and encouraged my management, team-driven, or even required? We have been beaten on the head with the research that shows the harmful effects of sitting. We at Health-Fit Corporate Wellness have tried for years to educate about the detrimental effects of sitting. But now, new research from Indiana University has demonstrated that walking as little as five minutes on three different occasions during a three-hour sitting period can reverse some of the harmful effects of prolonged sitting. We provide workspace methods and workplace challenges to get you moving without disruption in your day.• What if there were no unhealthy options available in your vending machine or cafeteria? Is this the pendulum swinging too far in the other direction? Most of the corporate offices we work with have shifted to healthful options in their dining areas, but still have unhealthy choices in snack and vending machines.• What if management at ALL levels in the organization supported employees working out during the day? There are a

lot of corporate policies that keep employees in their seats, but even more are on board with group step challenges, walk with the boss and even employee spin rides.• What if employees could see on-site practitioners to address their healthcare needs, especially those musculoskeletal issues that arise from working long hours? A number of the corporations that we work with have us directly on-site to allow employees to come get treated to address these issues without wasting valuable time during the day. This allows employees to feel better and prevents a disruption to their daily work schedule. • What if paid-time-off policies provided bonus time off based on the number of minutes an employee spends exercising in the company fitness center? In a similar vein, what if employees who choose to spend their 30-minute lunch break exercising could be given another 30 minutes to still eat lunch, away from their desk? What if employees were recognized for participating in walking meetings or signing up for 20-minute intervals at a walking/standing desk? None of these ideas are a complete pie-in-the-sky kind of concept. A key concept in wellness is not always ROI but also VOI (value of investment to the company and the employee). Wellness sometimes requires a shift in workplace policy and fresh thinking about how organizations can inspire better wellness habits for its employees. By encouraging 5-minute stretch and/or hall walking breaks in the workday need to become accepted as a norm. It has been our experience at Health-Fit Corporate Wellness that the corporations we work with that support more initiatives for the employees get not only the return, but also a greater value on their investment as employees are happier and healthier leading to a greater overall success in their work productivity and a more enjoyable work environment.
