Background (I)Health Commodities: are medicines, laboratory equipment, reagents, consumables and other products required for provision of health services. Lack of these commodities leads to poor health services and loss of lives
Management system: refers to processes and procedures for the handling of these health commodities to ensure they are in continuous supply for the uninterrupted provision health services using six rights of a logistics system Selection & SpecificationQuantification & Procurement, Storage & Distribution Inventory management & Data management systems

THE STUDYResearch questionWhat are the priorities and challenges of health commodities management systems in HIV/AIDS programmes in Abuja Nigeria?
Aim To explore opinions of health workers, on priorities and challenges of health commodities management system in HIV/AIDS programme in Abuja Nigeria in order to inform future standard operating procedures (SOP) revisions
ObjectivesTo conduct qualitative research using semi-structured interviews to:explore the opinions of health workers on how best to manage health commodities for the growing HIV/AIDS morbidity in Abuja, Nigeriacompare the opinion of health workers with national priorities on HIV/AIDS commodities management systems so as to ascertain gaps that may need to be addressedinform future SOP revisions on management of HIV/AIDS commodities
MethodologyStudy design: Qualitative (social constructionist)Study setting: Abuja, NigeriaSampling strategy: Purposive samplingSampling frame: Health workersHealth sector: HIV/AIDSRecruitment: Voluntary participation (ethics)Sample size: 12 health workersData collection: In-depth interview (taped)Data analysis: Thematic content analysis

• Donors “quick fix” approach to programme implementation often results in Government laxity to support commodities management system
o Expedited procurement of health commoditieso Quick infrastructural upgradeso Accelerated scale up of services
