The new cases being reported with cancer is about 41,000 annually

The HIV/AIDS pandemic, population growth, change in lifestyle and environment, are some of the factors contributing to the rise in cancer cases

Most of the patients present in late stage disease and end up getting palliative rather than curative treatment

Unfortunately, as the threat of early death and disability from chronic diseases like cancer grows in sub-Saharan Africa

Accessing cancer screening and treatment is one of the major hurdles cancer patients face.

Funding for health services has been greatly overstretched by the HIV/AIDS pandemic

resulting in inadequate budgetary allocations for development of specialized services like cancer treatment

Cancer Burden in KenyaKenya has few Cancer Centre's that are well equipped to treat cancer patients

Looking at the astronomical numbers of cancer cases, there is tremendous pressure on the existing facilities to handle all these cases effectively.

According to these figures, the plight of people with cancer in Kenya is dire and sometimes hopeless at best.

KNH Cancer CentreKenya has only one public Cancer Centre based at the KNH in Nairobi, equipped with two (2) Cobalt-60 machines and brachytherapy

The centre was established in 1968 when the country's population was 12 million as a research unit

Introduction Considering the established Ministry of Health referral system,

Cancer patients have to travel from all corners of the country, some from as far as 600 kilometres away, to access treatment at treatment centre in Kenyatta National Hospital
