Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is also known as colitis or spastic colon. It is a chronic intestinal

disorder that is characterized by abdominal pain ,cramps, constipation, and diarrhea. Usually this

can be attributed to what the person has eaten. Spicy foods and dairy products can often times trig-

ger this condition.

Here are a few tips that may help avoid IBS:

1. FOCUS ON EATING.-Do not get distracted by other things, try to concentrate on your meal. You see, if your

attention is drawn to something other than the food, this can lead to indigestion, cramping, bloating, and gas.

2. GO SMALL -Consider eating smaller more frequent meals. Five or six mini-meals spaced out through the day

as opposed to three standard meals. If you attempt to feast on a five course meal at one sitting this can take a toll on

your intestines.

3. JUST RELAX- It’s a proven fact that stress can make irritable bowel syndrome even worse, so learning to re-

lax may ease some of the discomfort. Relaxation tapes can help, as can books on stress-management

techniques.

IBS is no laughing matter and can really impact an individual’s quality of life.
