• What do you think are the most serious health problems for teens?

Components of Health

• GOOD Health is a state of well being where all components of health are in balance.

• Physical, Emotional, Social, Mental, and Spiritual, and Environmental.

• Physical Health: The way your body functions.

• Emotional Health: Coping with your feelings in a positive way.

• Social Health: The quality of your relationships with family, friends, teachers.

• Mental Health: your ability to recognize reality and cope with life’s daily demands and stress.

• Spiritual Health: Having spiritual direction and purpose in life. A “Higher Power” to help guide your ethics, morals, and values.

• Environmental Health: Having access to clean air, water, food, and space around you.

• Good Health is a BALANCE of Physical, Mental, and Emotional/Spiritual and Social Health!

• Compare the major causes of death in the past with the major causes of death today.

• Distinguish between controllable risk factors and uncontrollable risk factors.

• Compare the major causes of death for teens with those for other age groups in the United States.

• List 6 health risk behaviors that lead to health problems in

teens.• Name 3 behaviors you can adopt now to improve your health.

Health Today

• Health in the Past: Infectious diseases were the most significant health problems in the past. Many bacterial and viral infections due to the lack of antibiotics and vaccinations and death during birth to mother and child.

• Health Today: Many health problems today are caused in part by unhealthy lifestyles. Not enough exercise and too much bad food causing diseases like cancer, diabetes, heart disease, and poor self esteem.

Health Risk Factors

• Health Risk Factors: Anything that increases the likelihood of injury, disease, or other health problems.

• Controllable Risk Factors: Choices you can make to control risk factors such as getting more sleep, watching less TV, using less social media, eating healthier, getting more exercise. Focus on changing THESE!

• Uncontrollable Risk Factors: Your genetically inherited traits, gender, race, age.

Health Risk Behaviors To Avoid!

• Poor Nutrition

• Lack of Exercise

• Smoking

• Injury Causing Behaviors

• Use of Alcohol, and Illicit Drug Use

• Risky Sexual Behaviors

• Texting or using cell phone while driving

• NOT wearing seat belts

Taking Charge of Your Health & Wellness

• Knowledge: Having access to information to make good choices.

• Lifestyle: Making behavioral changes to your lifestyle.

• Attitude: Having a positive attitude towards YOURSELF, life and others.

• Consequences: Facing the effects of your behavior on your health.
