Introduction

• Emotional eating is the practice of consuming large quantities of food usually comfort foods or junk foods in response to feelings instead of hunger.

• 75% of overeating is caused by emotions

What’s the most common situation that causes emotional eating?• Emotions- sadness -anger –scared -

jelalousy –ashameness –fustration -lonelyness –restlessness -boredom

• Taking your mind off something by eating

• Behavior and habits• Depression• Enviornment• History and genetics- childhood -

memories• School work- not doing well on tests -

getting into trouble

What’s the most common situation that causes emotional eating? Cont.• Usually in girls cases any extra

weight is obligated that they have to lose – girls want to impress guys -girls want to impress other girls with how they look compared to eachother

• Effect of celebrities on teens – teens see celebrities and see how skinny they are, they try to look like that -teens go on diets if the celebrity/ role model looks skinnier

Why does emotional eating comfort people?• People reach their “ weak spots” and

eat their “comfort foods” when something good or bad has happened in their life

• Happy- crave foods like pizza• Sad- sweets (ice cream, cookies)• Bored- salty and crunchy ( chips,

pretzels)• Guys- prefer hot and spicy homemade

meals• Girls- prefer chocolate and ice cream

to tell them to eat.• People eat food to “cure” feelings –

People express their feelings while eating –People eat to take their minds off of what’s going on in their life

What are ways to prevent emotional eating?• Ask yourself questions – Am I

hungry for junk food? – What else can I be doing instead of eating?

• Try tips – Eat slower to avoid eating –Schedule something to distract you from eating –Eat healthier –Break habits as early as you can –Find other ways to deal with situations than to eat- Excercise

Nutritionists- Your personal doctor• Keep your mind off of food by

texting/calling or hanging out with friends
