ShapeShapeis a small perennial herb,with a horizontal, irregularly knotted, bright yellow root-stock from 6 to 12 inches high, erect, cylindrical, hairy, with downward-pointing hairs, especially above, surrounded at the base with a few short, brown scales., dark green, hairy leaves.

The flower is solitary, terminal, erect, small,

with three small greenish-white sepals, no petals and numerous stamens.

The fruit is a head of small, fleshy,

oblong, crimson berries, tipped with the persistent styles and containing one or two hard

black, shining seeds .

Active constituent of golden seal

The active constituents of goldenseal include hydrastine, berberine, berberastine, canadine, candaline, and hydrastinine.

Fatty acids, resin.

Polyphenolic acids, meconin, chlorogenic acid, phytosterins.

And contain small amounts of volatile oil.

Chemical test•Berberine

is a quaternary ammonium salt from

the group of isoquinoline alkaloids.

Berberine is strongly yellow colored and shows

a strong yellow fluorescence by reacting with H2O2

Uses of goldensealGoldenseal was used for treatment of cancers and swellings of the breasts.

Goldenseal have been used for various health conditions such as skin diseases, ulcers, and gonorrhea.

Now, goldenseal is used for colds and other respiratory tract infections, eye infections, and (inflammation or infection of the vagina.

It is also applied to wounds and canker sores, and is used as a mouthwash for sore gums, mouth, and throat.

goldenseal is being useful for functional disorders of the stomach, catarrhal gastritis, atonic dyspepsia, chronic constipation, hepatic congestion.

relieving intestinal infections.

Goldenseal Tea may be helpful in overall fight against diabetes.

Goldenseal Tea may help in relief of yeast infections.

Goldenseal Tea may helpful in treating liver problems in alcoholics.

Side Effects and Safety

berberine, cause uterine contractions and increase levels of bilirubin. Those with heart conditions should only use goldenseal under the supervision of a health professional.

The safety of goldenseal in children,and people with kidney and liver disease is unknown.

It may cause irritation of the mouth and throat, nausea, increased nervousness, and digestive problems.

. Taking goldenseal over a long period of time can reduce absorption of B vitamins.

Contra-indicationGolden seal not be administrated to children under two years of age .

Avoid goldenseal during pregnancy .

Avoid with gastrointestinal inflammation, and with proinflammatory disorders.

Golden seal is contra-indicated in hypertension as large amount of hydrastine lead to restrict preferal blood vessel

It dose not used to treat purulent ear discharge as it may cause rupture in eardrum.
