Glycomet (Metformin Tablets) is indicated along with diet and exercise, to improve glycaemic control in adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus. Glycomet can be used together with a sulphonylurea or insulin to improve glycaemic control in adults. Metformin tablets help to control the amount of glucose (sugar) in your blood. This medicine decreases the amount of glucose you absorb from your food and the amount of glucose made by your liver.

Warnings

Clearsky Pharmacy

The risk of lactic acidosis increases with the degree of renal dysfunction, impairment of creatinine clearance and the patient's age.Since impaired hepatic function can significantly limit the ability to clear lactate, metformin should generally be avoided in patients with clinical or laboratory evidence of hepatic disease.

Warnings

Clearsky Pharmacy

Patients must be warned against excessive alcohol intake either acute or chronic when taking metformin, since alcohol consumption potentiates the effect of metformin on lactate metabolism. Administration of Glycomet Tablets should be temporarily discontinued two days prior to any intravascular radiocontrast study and not restarted until renal function has normalised.

Clearsky Pharmacy

Glycomet side effects can include headache or muscle pain, weakness, gastrointestinal upset, including cramps, mild nausea, vomiting, diarrhea increased flatulence, gas, and stomach pain.

The most serious potential side effect of metformin use is lactic acidosis; this complication is very rare, and the vast majority of these cases seem to be related to comorbid conditions, such as impaired liver or kidney function, rather than to the Metformin itself.

Call your doctor at once in case you have any other serious side effect such as: Feeling short of breath, even with mild exertion; Swelling or rapid weight gain; or Fever, chills, body aches, flu symptoms.

Glycomet Overdose

Clearsky Pharmacy

Adverse reactions of a more intense character including epigastric discomfort, nausea and vomiting followed by diarrhoea, drowsiness, weakness, dizziness, malaise and headache may be observed. In case these symptoms persist, lactic acidosis must be excluded. Hypoglycaemia has not been seen even with ingestion of up to 85g metformin although lactic acidosis has occurred in such circumstances.Hypoglycaemia can occur if excessive amounts of Metformin tablets (Glycomet) are taken with a sulphonylurea, insulin or alcohol.

Overdose

Clearsky Pharmacy

Metformin tablets must be discontinued and proper supportive therapy instituted. Metformin can be dialysable with a clearance of up to 170mL/min under good haemodynamic conditions.

Glycomet During Pregnancy

Clearsky Pharmacy

Glycomet (Metformin Hydrochloride tablets) has been classified by the US FDA as Pregnancy Category B. There are no adequate and well-controlled studies for Metformin tablets conducted in pregnant women. Recent information strongly suggests that abnormal blood glucose levels during pregnancy are associated with the higher incidence of congenital abnormalities. Most experts recommend that insulin be used during pregnancy to maintain the blood glucose levels as close to normal as possible. Metformin tablets should not be used in pregnancy unless clearly required.
