GEM HOSPITAL ORGANIZED MARATHON FOR WOMEN & WOMENS HEALTH AWARENESS EXPO

Gem Hospital had organized a week long program titled “Penne Nalama” with the intent to create awareness about Women’s health for the general public.The fi rst of it for all it started with women’s mini marathon held on Jan 24th at 6 am.Mrs.Shiny Wilson, Olympic athlete participated in the event. The event was fl agged off by Our Honorable collector Mrs.Archana Patnaik along with a few other women achievers from Coimbatore and Dr.C.Palanivelu, Chairman of Gem Hospital & Research Centre, Coimbatore.

Patients who have fought cancer and obesity also participated.The marathon distance was between 3-7 kms, More than 3800 women participated in the event.

Former Chennai high court judge justice K.B.K. Vasuki inaugurated the women medical expo and appreciated the well planned expo with informative charts, virtual parts, 3D videos. Doctors were explaining in simple language understandable to Public, School and college children. Commissioner of police Dr.A .Amalraj released the book ‘PENNAE Nalama’ written by Gem doctors and said that it is an excellent book written in simple language which can clear all doubts of public. Mrs. Uma Preman opened free cancer screening clinic which will function on every Saturday. Tan Shri Dato MP Ramasamy leading industrialist of Malaysia inaugurated the international centre of excellence for laparoscopic Gynaec surgery. He appreciated GEM team particularly, the director of GEM HOSPITAL for treating his wife PonShri Indra Gandhi who came with a big tumour in the uterus. It was a very challenging case to operate even by robot. He expressed his happiness over having received the treatment in GEM hospital by advanced laparoscopic method which made it possible for them to return to their country on third day itself. He also added that ‘The best centre in Asia is GEM hospital’ said the Malaysian doctors. Tan Shri Dato MP Ramasamy felt that starting of international centre by Dr Palanivelu will benefi t patients from different countries.

“Women’s health is the Nation’s health” is the theme. One tenth of world’s death is due to cancer. Overall ladies are affected more than men. 35-40% of cancers in ladies are from uterus and ovary. 20-40% of ladies in reproductive age group develop fi broids. Early stage tumours do not present with symptoms. 2/3rd of cancers are diagnosed in advanced stage. Symptoms indicate advanced stage. Regular check is the only way to diagnose early stage cancer. Surgery by laparoscopic method is the simple painless treatment for cancer. In a day or two she can resume routine work. Early cancer is curable. No need for radiotherapy or chemotherapy. Pap smear is a simple screening test done for cervical cancer, which is done once in three years. Now vaccines are also available to protect against cervical cancer.

Today due to life style changes and food habits digestive and Gynaec problems are on the increasing trend. In view of the above fact an exclusive Gynaecology department was formed which has now become Asia’s most advanced laparoscopic Gynaec centre for fi broids and cancer uterus.
