OverviewThis condition is an inflammation and swelling ofthe veins of the anus or rectum. Hemorrhoids mayoccur inside or outside the anus.
CausesHemorrhoids can be caused by frequent andexcessive straining during bowel movements. Theycan develop because of chronic constipation, genetic predisposition, aging or pregnancy. Sittingon the toilet for long periods may also contribute tohemorrhoid formation.
Internal HemorrhoidsInternal hemorrhoids form inside the anus. They arenot visible and cannot be felt, and they generally donot cause discomfort. Symptoms of internalhemorrhoids may include bright red blood that isvisible during bowel movements, in the toilet bowl,on the toilet paper, or on the stool. In some cases,an internal hemorrhoid may protrude through theanus and become irritated and painful.
External HemorrhoidsExternal hemorrhoids form on the outside of theanus. An external hemorrhoid can form a hard, swollen bulge that causes pain and discomfort, particularly if a blood clot forms inside the vein.
TreatmentTreatment options may initially include warm bathsoaks, creams and suppositories. Drinking theproper amount of water and eating a diet high infiber may be helpful in relieving constipation andstraining. In some cases, surgical treatment isneeded to reduce the size of the hemorrhoid orremove it completely.
