Exercise and Cancer
Exercise has been proven to decrease the symptoms of cancer and mortality rates for certain types of cancer such as: Colon Cancer Breast Cancer Endometrial Cancer Prostate Cancer
When not to Exercise There are a few precautions to take when exercising during cancer
treatment due to the side effects of medication and chemo/radiotherapy. These include:
Nadir point (roughly 7-14 after chemotherapy treatment administration) Swimming Blood Results Peripheral Neuropathy Neuroendocrine Toxicity Cardiopulmonary Toxicity Anaemia Thrombocytopenia
Colon Cancer
Exercise reduces colon cancer risk by 30% when compared to non-exercising individuals.
Increased duration and frequency of exercise leads to a greater decrease in risk of colon cancer.
Breast Cancer
25% reduction in risk of breast cancer development in women who exercise.
This is most beneficial for exercise carried out during adult years, and on a consistent long term bases.
Endometrial Cancer
30-35% reduction in risk of endometrial cancer development in women who exercise.
The benefits of exercise are related to the amount of exercise undertaken.
Prostate Cancer
During treatment for prostate cancer, exercise reduces the risk of mortality by up to 61% in individuals who undertake moderate to high intensity exercise for 3 hour per week.
