Ontario’s 2011 Electrical Safety Report ◦ identifies a 250% increase (2005-2009) in the number of
electricians electrocuted on the job,
◦ representing 20% of all electrical-related fatalities in the province.

2008 Incident Audit Results 108 electrical incidents reviewed ◦ 80 (74%) of the 108 were assessed as not likely to have occurred
if the principles of CSA-Z462 were applied ◦ Included in the 80

The data clearly indicates safe work procedures (job plans, PPE, special tools &
precautions, etc.) were either not documented or followed.

What does an Electrical Program include? Code Compliance? Equipment Approvals? Safety by design? PPE and tools? Equipment Maintenance? Procedures? Hazard Identification? Risk Assessments? Due diligence?

OHSA requires an employer to ◦ Document work procedures
◦ Train workers to understand and apply procedures
◦ Prevent shock and burns with hazard-specific PPE
OHSA ultimately allows the employer to determine how these requirements are met ◦ As long as those workers exposed to electrical hazards are
protected.

The front line worker needs, at the work face: Clearly defined scope of work Task-specific PPE, clothing, gloves and tools required Shock and arc flash hazard information Hazard and risk assessment information Task/equipment specific precautions Acknowledgment of competencies and training Equipment specific maintenance records Access to reference materials
