THE WORKFORCE CALCULATOR

In the beginning….....
■ There was 5 years forward…...........
But the force was not yet with us….
How do we work out how to staff the enhanced early intervention service?
Finally, the answer to all our problems…
Is here….....
What is the EIP Workforce Calculator?
■ The workforce calculator is a tool to support effective, evidence-based discussion and planning between providers and commissioners. It may require, and is designed to allow, adjustment of some elements where there is good quality local data to support local decisions.
How does the EIP Workforce Calculator Work?
■ The workforce calculator uses specific assumptions but these can be varied according to local circumstances. These estimations have been developed from the published literature and informed by the varied experience of the Expert Reference Group. Incidence estimates for people aged 16-64 years for individual clinical commissioning groups (CCGs) should be entered using the Public Health England Fingertips tool (these are derived from http://www.psymaptic.org/ adjusted for CCGs).
■ These estimates can be supplemented in the tool where there are specific issues in the area not accounted for by the PsyMaptic calculations. There may also be circumstances where the level of severity is recognised as being exceptionally high (for example, because of levels of drug misuse or trauma) and a weighting may be agreed and entered for this. These adjustments can be expected to lead to the best available assessment of need for EIP services.
Imports local epidemiological data
Whole Time Equivalent of EIP StaffThe different elements of the workforce are based on those typically employed in EIP services. Care coordinator caseloads are estimated at 15. Specific dedicated time is considered separately for family intervention and CBT for psychosis (by appropriately skilled and supervised practitioners). One support/peer worker for two care coordinators is included to provide practical support. There is a requirement for specialist employment/training expertise, which should be estimated in proportion to care coordinator numbers (for example, one worker per team).
CBT for Psychosis:Estimates of CBT for psychosis sessions (16-20) are based on NICE guidelines with additional sessions (5-9) over a 3-year period for complex work and booster sessions.Over that period, most people with psychosis (80%) are expected to participate.
Family Interventions:The figure of 10 sessions of family intervention is derived from NICE guidelines but only an estimate of 33% are anticipated to take this up.Proportions receiving these interventions are based on estimates from published work and the experiences of the Expert Reference Group.
Medical Interventions:Medical time is based on assuming a medical assessment for all referrals with an estimate of the requirement for subsequent assessments based on the experiences of the Expert Reference Group.
