Introduction What is pH ?
pH stands for “Potential or Power of H+ ion”. It is the measurement of acidity or basicity of an aqueous solution. Mathematically, pH is the negative logarithm of the activity of the hydronium ion, more often expressed as the measure of the hydronium ion concentration.
Mathematically, pH = -log[H+] or log[1/H+]
pH Indicators.
A pH indicator is a chemical compound that is added in small amounts to a solution so that the pH of the solution can be determined visually. Normally, the indicator causes the colour of the solution to change depending on the pH. Indicators can also show change in other physical properties, for e.g. olfactory indicators show change in their odour.Some pH indicators are : phenopthalein, methyl orange and litmus, pH paper etc.
The pH Scale
• The pH scale is a scale which measures how acidic or basic a substance is ?
• The pH scale ranges from 0 to 14 in which :
A pH of 7 is neutral. (Example is Pure Water). A pH less than 7 is acidic. (Example is HCL). A pH greater than 7 is basic. (Example is Baking Soda).
An Experiment with Fruit JuicesFruit Juices are generally consumed by most of the people in the wold or we can say they are the most consumed drinking items all over the world. But Did we know about their effects on our body.

Detection of pH
Method Used 1-2 drops of the sample of fruit juice
of each brand was taken. Put on the pH paper. The change in the color of pH paper
was noticed. Compared with the colours in
standard pH scale. Note Down the pH of the drink.
Let’s take example of some common types of fruit Juices like :

The table below shows the type and pH value of the most commonly used fruit Juices.
Most of the juices are acidic in nature
ResultAfter conducting several tests, it was concluded that the different types of fruit juices namely, Lemon Juice, Orange Juice Apple Juice, Papaya Juice, Mix Fruit Juice, Lychee Juice, all are acidic in nature. On comparing the pH value of different types Lemon Juice is most acidic and Papaya Juice is least acidic of all the six types taken.
Reason of acidity : Fruit Juices are generally acidic because of the presence of citric acid and phosphoric acid. pH values of juices of different types are different due to the variation in amount of acidic contents.
Effect of fruit juices on healthThey meet most of the nutrients & vitamins required for the growth of body as well as mind. But Specifically : Apple Juice : It improves memory and retention power. It decreases the chances of aging diseases. Also it has been said that “ An Apple a day keeps the doctor away “. Papaya Juice : It helps in well Digestion of food. Orange (Mausami) Juice : It is the best source of Vitamin C and also provides enough potassium, thiamin, and folate for the body. Pomegranate Juice : It helps in purifying as well as making of the blood. Particularly recommended to patients.
Fruit juice in moderate amounts can help children and adults meet daily recommendations for fruit consumption, nutrient intake and calories. But, as They also contain excessive sugars like cold drinks, so excessive drinking of juices can led to tooth decay. Juices are not good enough for children below 6 years. Giving children excessive juice can lead to poor nutrition, diarrhea, gas, abdominal pain, bloating, and tooth decay. Being acidic, they can cause acidity.
ConclusionAll of us know that Fruits are the best source of all type of nutrients and vitamins that are necessory for proper growth of our body and mind. We should eats fruits regularly to make a balance of required nutrients in our body but we should not exceed the limits. We should drink fruit juices from good quality shops only which uses good quality of fruits otherwise they can lead to many harmful diseases.
We should eat raw fruits to make the most of them.
