INTRODUCTION• Dental Insurance is an insurance coverage for individuals to

protect them against dental costs. It insures against the expensive dental treatments, dental diseases and accident to teeth.

• Yours and your family’s dental health is important, so it's worth considering a dental insurance plan to help you pay for the cost of treatment.

• Dental insurance plans contribute towards, or pay for, the cost of check-up's and treatment, giving you peace of mind and saving you money.

• Dental cover is a cost-effective solution which will allow you to choose the dentist you are treated by and give you the choice of opting for NHS or private treatment.

TYPES OF DENTAL INSURANCEThere are several different types of individual, family or group dental insurance plans. They are broadly grouped into three primary categories

• Indemnity (or sometimes called: true dental insurance ) : which allows you to see any dentist you want who accepts insurance

• Preferred Provider Organizations dental plans (PPO) : When a dentist signs a contract with a dental insurance company, that provider agrees to match the insurance fee schedule and give their customers a reduced cost for services. This is considered an In-Network Provider or Preferred Provider Organizations (PPO)

• Dental Health Managed Organizations (DHMO) : in which you are assigned to an in-network dentist or in-network dental office and must stay within that network to receive your dental benefits

DENTAL PROCEDURES WHICH ARE NOT COVERED BY INSURANCE

• Porcelain VeneersA veneer is a thin wafer shell that is bonded to the front of a tooth. Due to the cosmetic nature of this procedure, veneers are not covered by insurances when they are initially put on. They may, however, be covered by a dental discount plan.

• Teeth WhiteningWhitening allows for stains or discoloration to be removed, making each tooth whiter. This is always considered cosmetic and not covered by insurances.

• BondingA dentist can correct a space between your teeth by bonding a composite to the teeth to close the gap. Your first bonding is rarely covered by insurances.

DENTAL INSURANCE COVERAGE TYPES• Preventative Most insurance companies consider routine cleanings

and examinations as preventative dental care, however, X-rays, sealants and fluoride can be deemed as preventative or basic, depending upon the specific insurance carrier.

• Basic or Restorative Basic or restorative dental treatment usually consists of fillings and simple extractions. Root canals can be considered basic or major. However, the majority of dental plans list root canals as basic.

• Major Crowns, bridges, dentures, partials, surgical extractions and dental implants are dental procedures that most dental insurance companies consider as a major procedure.

DID YOU KNOW ?

1. Dental insurance is a legal agreement between the insurance company and the customer whereby the company agrees to pay a part of the dental bills that are incurred by the customer. Should any issues arise, it is the company’s responsibility to resolve them.

2. Dental insurance and general medical insurance are somewhat different. For many cases in countries like USA, UK, Australia & Canada dental insurance benefits have not increased to a great extent over the years, although the premiums may have increased. Such is not the case with general medical insurance.

Page 9: DENTAL INSURANCE

3. Dental Insurance companies will claim to pay for as much as 80% of the total bill. However, in reality you should expect them to only pay anywhere from 35 to 70% of the dental expenses that you incur. The reminder has to be paid by you. But, there are some dental insurance companies that contribute to 100% of your total bill. So, it is advisory to double-check before you take your decision regarding dental insurance plans.

4. Most dental insurance companies will not provide coverage for dental procedures that are cosmetic. This includes things like dental implants which are usually not covered by most dental insurance companies. Make sure you check the treatments that are covered in your insurance cover.

INTRODUCTION TO INDIAN DENTAL INSURANCE

• If you opt for an Indian dental insurance plan, the costs incurred due to dental care would be paid for by the insurer.

• The Indian dental insurance sector is in its nascent stages and currently only a handful of dental insurance plans are available on a stand alone basis.

• A dental plan offers cover against sudden financial hardship due to dental emergencies.

INDIAN DENTAL INSURANCE- THE CURRENT SCENARIO

Unlike most western countries, specific dental insurance plans are not common in India (with a few exceptions like Dentashakti dental insurance) which is discussed in the latter part of the presentation. In India, oral health is normally integrated with the general health insurance schemes. However some popular tooth care companies have forged tie ups with general or health insurance companies to produce dental insurance products.

TYPES OF INDIAN DENTAL INSURANCE PLANSIndian dental insurance plans are mainly of two types:

Stand alone dental insurance plan: • This type of plan covers the expenses related to general

dental problems, such as periodontitis and extraction of permanent teeth due to ailments such as caries.

• In this plan, the amount of expense to be reimbursed as well as the period of such cover is fixed.

• This type of plan is generally provided by the popular dental care product companies in association with one of the insurance companies.

Dental insurance cover as part of general health insurance plan:

• This type of dental insurance is provided by the general insurance companies as part of their own general health insurance schemes, such as health advantage policy or student medical policy.

• Through this scheme, one can claim dental expenses along with the other kinds of reimbursements, such as the cost of medicines or hospitalization.

• This plan also offers tax benefits up to a certain fixed amount under the income tax act.

• Janashakthi Insurance PLC has entered in to an agreement with India’s multi-specialty dental clinic and orthodontic centre, Dentavista Healthcare Private Limited to launch a unique, one of its kind dental insurance scheme.

• The scheme Dentashakthi, allows customers routine treatments such as scaling and root canals plus specific orthodontic and implantology treatment of dental implants, gum surgery, crown and bridge and even removable appliances for children based on the dental cover and premium structure.

• The costs of various treatments at Dentavista clinics are extremely competitive compared to the cost in Europe, USA, Australia and Canada, helping you save enough for a holiday as well as your treatments.
