I n multiple published papers digital breast tomosynthesis (DBT) has demonstrated the ability to improve the detection of breast cancer while, at the same time, reducing the number of false positive studies. It has also benefited women in that the recall rate from screening mammography has decreased approximately 30% when DBT is used. This new modality has been used in clinical practice since 2009 and it has consistently been chosen as the “hottest new technology” since then. This course will focus on the clinical applications of DBT. Lectures on basic principles of the modality, how to interpret studies with masses and calcifications, and workflow plus practical applications will be given by Fellows of the Society of Breast Imaging who have had extensive experience with DBT. Equally important, the attendee will be given the opportunity to participate in a case- based series of lectures where they will read these studies along with the faculty. An audience response system (ARS) will be used to record the registrants’ answers thus allowing them to obtain SAMS for maintenance of certification. A total of 6.5 SAMS will be offered in the course. The individual physician will only need 1.5 additional SAMS to qualify for new mammographic modality training. Also, similar challenging case-based multimodality lectures (breast MRI, breast ultrasound and mammography) using the ARS will be offered by the faculty. Finally, relevant lectures on contrast enhanced mammography and the new BIRADS atlas will be given. The course should also prove to be of interest for technologists who are, or will be, involved with DBT. We hope to see you in either Orlando in January or Las Vegas in September! OBJECTIVES Describe current uses of DBT in the screening and diagnostic settings Review the DBT patterns of benign and malignant disease; provide attendees with tools to better discriminate between breast cancer versus benign lesions Apply DBT effectively to reduce failure in cancer detection in patients before the next mammogram Recognize image workflow for comprehensive DBT examination review and interpretation Demonstrate an approach to biopsy of lesions visualized only by DBT Cultivate a greater understanding and appreciation of DBT in the screening environment ACCREDITATION STATEMENT This activity has been planned and implemented in accordance with the Essential Areas and policies of the Accreditation Council for Continuing Medical Education through the joint sponsorship of The American College of Radiology and Society of Breast Imaging. approximately 30% when DBT is used.

This new modality has been used in

will focus on the clinical applications

of DBT. Lectures on basic principles of

the modality, how to interpret studies

read these studies along with the faculty.

An audience response system (ARS)

will be used to record the registrants’

answers thus allowing them to obtain

SAMS for maintenance of certification.

A total of 6.5 SAMS will be offered in the

course. The individual physician will only

need 1.5 additional SAMS to qualify for

new mammographic modality training.

Also, similar challenging case-based

multimodality lectures (breast MRI, breast

ultrasound and mammography) using the

ARS will be offered by the faculty. Finally,

OBJECTIVES

Describe current uses of DBT in the

screening and diagnostic settings

Review the DBT patterns of benign and

malignant disease; provide attendees

with tools to better discriminate

between breast cancer versus benign

lesions

Apply DBT effectively to reduce failure

in cancer detection in patients before

the next mammogram

Recognize image workflow for

comprehensive DBT examination

review and interpretation

Demonstrate an approach to biopsy of

lesions visualized only by DBT

Cultivate a greater understanding and

appreciation of DBT in the screening

environment
