Autism??? ‘Autos’; Yunani; means oneself or

someone.

Introduced by Dr Leo Karner, a professor of Psychiatry in Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in 1943

He defined autism as affective distraction, perception, linguistic and communication.

All of them are different; Have their own strength and

weakness. Individual observation to

determine.

Factors that might cause; Genetics. Drugs and alcohol during pregnancy.

Can it be cured? Yes, if parents can detect the problems of

their child at early stage and help given to them (refer to autism center/ see doctor).

If not, the goal is just to train them to fit into the society like normal people.

Most of the autistic children; Love to isolate themselves

Cannot tolerate with changes in his/her daily routine.

Inability to express feelings

Love to repeat what they heard or seen (by drawing)

Have attention problems and can get distracted very easily

How to manage them?

Setting up rules If you do your work, you can watch TV.

If you could memorize 1-5, you can continue play your game.

- This is meant to make them stay focus towards something, become more responsible.

Training and repeating using cue cards If the child wants to go to the toilet, show the teacher the

picture of toilet.

- This one seemed to be the most effective way especially for young autistic kids.

Behaviourism

Positive reinforcements○ Rewards, praises, chance to do what they like.

Negative reinforcements○ Time out○ Don’t let them do what they like (If you don’t

do your work, I’ll tell your mom not to let you watch TV)

*negative reinforcements are not really encouraged cause it has short term effects.*they may get confused by the punishment; time out, and they are actually enjoying it.

As English teachers, take note!!

Autism children have problem in language development. They repeat what they heard or what he said himself. E.g: good morning class, good morning class.

They cannot socialize easily, refuse to share their interest and achievements, avoid any interactions with environment.

Less sensitive to the people around them. Even if everyone is crying he can still smiling and having fun.

Our respondent had suggested that; Teacher should know the child’s condition. If he is quite, don’t

isolate. Try to make them involve in class activity.

Try to talk to them.

Don’t scold, hitting and etc.

Find ways to help them (using bell to help them focus in their work).

Give them chances to participate and do their work.
