History of Hair

Transplant

The origins of hair transplant surgery stem

from Japanese dermatologist, Dr. Okuda, who

in 1939 published a revolutionary method in a

Japanese medical journal of using small grafts

that were similar to the way hair

transplantation is performed today. This

method involved using hair transplant grafts to

correct lost hair from various body areas,

including the scalp, eyebrow, and moustache

areas.

In the late 50’s one physician in particular, Dr.

Norman Orentreich, began to experiment with

the idea of relocating or transplanting the hair

on the back and sides of the head to the

balding areas. Dr. Orentreich’s experiments

showed that when bald resistant hairs from the

back and sides of the head were relocated, they

maintained their bald resistant genetic

characteristic regardless of where they were

transplanted.

This principle, known as “Donor Dominance”,

established that hair could be transplanted

from the bald resistant donor areas to the

balding areas and continues to grow for a life

time. This laid the foundation for modern hair

transplantation.

During the 60’s and 70’s hair transplants grew

in popularity. However, the standard of care

involved the use of larger grafts that were

removed by round punches and often

contained many hairs.

In the 80’s hair restoration surgery evolved

dramatically, as the large punch grafts were

gradually replaced with a more refined

combination of mini and micro grafts. This

“combination mini micro grafting” hair

transplantation procedure no longer used the

punch to extract the bald resistant grafts.

Rather a strip of bald resistant hair was

surgically removed from the back of the head

and then trimmed into mini and micro grafts.

FUT vs FUE Hair Transplant

There are two approaches to hair transplant, and these are Follicular Unit

Transplantation (FUT) and Follicular Unit Extraction (FUE). Each have their

own set of benefits and setbacks but when it come to the length of time that

it takes to finish and to heal, this factor creates a significant effect on your

decision.

FUT or the strip method is considered to be the traditional method for hair

transplantation. This process of hair graft removal requires having to take a

strip of hair containing the donor grafts from the back of the hair. Once the

strip of scalp has been removed the hair grafts are then individually

extracted by hair technicians using a microscope as the hair transplant

surgeon prepares the recipient site.

In preparing the bald area for the hair grafts, the surgeon creates micro

incisions with the proper spacing. The hair grafts are then implanted into

incisions making sure that proper angulation and direction is ensured.

For FUE there is no need for a strip of scalp to remove as a means to

reduce scarring problems. A thin and hollowed instrument is used to

individually extract hair follicles using a punch technique. While the

recipient site is being prepared the hair grafts are placed in a solution to

maintain its viability.

In some clinics a special machine is used to remove the hair grafts while

simultaneously preparing the bald area and the extracted hairs are

automatically implanted thereafter. But the same careful techniques done

in implanting for FUT holds true for FUE as well.

The exact time that would take for both these procedures to finish really

depends on the extent of the work to be done. But generally given similar

circumstances, FUE takes so much longer to finish because extra care,

skill and a good eye for detail in order to remove each hair follicle

successfully. This is to ensure that the integrity of the hair grafts are

maintained thus increasing survivability.

But when it comes to healing, FUE heals much faster due to its less

invasive nature. There is no longitudinal scar that you have to wait to heal

up which is characteristic of the FUT method. FUE only creates tiny scars

which easily turns into scabs and would even simply require a week or so

to close. But proper care is still important to make sure that the healing

process is not disrupted.

The time that the final results can be seen is dependent on the health of

the patient and of course the way the integrity of the hair follicles is

preserved during extraction whether it is FUT or FUE. That is why it is

important to thoroughly discuss these options with a certified surgeon to

see which ones actually works best for you.

And it is also essential that you make yourself physically healthy so that the

hair grafts can thrive better on your scalp. But what is most important is

that you find a highly skilled and experienced hair transplant surgeon

because this not only determines the length of time to finish, but also the

quality of work and the general outcome.

Hair Transplant Timeline: The Road to Recovery We all want to know if a certain action to a problem is the

best choice. And when it comes to finding a remedy to hair

loss, hair transplant technique is often considered to be

one of the dependable solutions. Since it is an invasive and a

very delicate procedure, most people are apprehensive and

also curious on how the results would come about. So to

answer all the questions, I will take you through a rough hair

transplant timeline of recovery comes about.

The First Few Hours to the First Day after Surgery

You may feel a little fuzzy at this time due to the after effects

of anesthesia, which is why you would need assistance when

going home or in doing things around the house at this time.

You may also start to feel some pain or discomfort as

anesthesia starts to wane. But you will already be prescribed

with an analgesic to relieve it.

The First Week

Around this time you will experience mild swelling particularly

in the forehead area which is gradually at the end of the

week. You can reduce this problem by lightly applying a cold

compress. The grafts are slowly becoming secured in place

at this time. Crusts and scabs may form around this time both

on the donor and recipient sites, but you should still take

extra care not to scratch it because the chances that you

might dislodge it are still high.

The redness which can be observed after surgery and even a

few days after will slowly start to disappear as the week

ends.

You can already resume normal activities around this time,

although you should avoid strenuous exercises and contact

sports.

Two Weeks to Two Months

This time of recovery can be considered to be the trickiest

because this is when your hair shedding takes place. This

should not be a cause for concern because this is only

normal and it is caused a shock loss. This is the dormant

phase that your new hair implants goes through on the

process to recovery.

Wayne Rooney had hair transplant in 2012 and on the

road of his recovery.

Three to Four Months

You can consider this time period to be the “spring” of your

recovery process because you will now start to see some

hair growth pushing through. Although the start of hair

growth varies for every patient, but three months is the usual

time that hair growth starts to show. The hairs will be very

fine and thin at first but it will gradually thicken in texture

overtime.

Five to Six Months

This time around you might be pleased to see that your hair

has grown at a considerable length, at least 2-3 inches. This

will already show a marked improvement and the hair

follicles also begin to thicken at this point.

What Determines Hair

Transplant Cost in Australia?

A lot of people hinge their hopes on the promising results of

hair transplant surgery. But they end up having these crushed

the moment they learn about the price. Generally they can run

the thousands, particularly in Australia, depending on various

factors. To help you understand better why this is so, here are

several factors that causes it to be so.

The Extent of Work Required

The severity of your hair loss can determine the amount of

work that has to be done on you. However, this will be decided

on after a thorough assessment made by the surgeon. Some

patients may require only a minor touch up to improve the

hairline, while others would require a more extensive

coverage.

The Number of Hair Grafts Needed

After the surgeon determines the area that needs coverage, he

can now estimate the number of grafts that he would need.

This can also significantly affect the cost because hair grafts

are priced individually.

Each follicular unit and micro graft in Australian clinics would

range around $5-$14. And generally the more you need, the

cheaper the price for each graft.

The Hair Transplant Technique Used

There are two approaches to hair transplant, and these

are FUT (Follicular Unit Transplantation) and FUE (Follicular

Unit Extraction). Each has their own level of difficulty which

affects their respective prices.

FUT is relatively easier, although it is more invasive. It involves

a large incision made at the back of the head to remove a strip

of your scalp which contains the donor hair grafts. Afterwards,

these are individually removed by hair technicians using a

highly magnified microscope, before they are transplanted into

the recipient site. Generally this technique is safer and

produces better graft survival.

Hair Transplant Tips & Guide

FUE, on the other hand, requires careful manipulation so

as not to damage the hair grafts. Using a fine tool, the

hairs are directly removed from the donor site using a

punch technique. This takes more time and skill to

perform, which explains why it costs more. But some

individuals invest on this because it protects your scalp

from the unattractive scar associated with FUT.

The price of hair grafts also vary for each technique. For

FUT, it would usually be around $6-$8, and $8-$10 for

FUE.

The Number of Sessions

Not every hair transplant procedure finish in just one

session. There will be cases that would require more than

one to cover entirely the area or to create a more

successful result. This is where the extent of the hair loss

affects the sessions needed.

Multiple sessions might be arranged by the surgeon so as

not to overly traumatize the scalp, which can make is a

poor environment for the hair grafts to thrive in.

Hair Surgeon’s Fee

The surgeon that you choose can also largely determine

the amount that you are going to pay for your operation.

Some surgeons, particularly those who have made a name

for themselves can demand for a much higher price. And

this can be understandable especially if it is proven that he

can create impressive and successful results.

Theatre Fee

The theatre fee can also significantly affect the total price

6 Factors That Makes a Successful Hair Transplant

Losing your hair is something that will definitely shake you to

your core. Not only do you lose your hair, but also your

confidence as self-esteem as well. People choose different

measures to answer this problem. Some would take

medications, while others use wigs to conceal the problem.

But for those who want to take that brave and radical step, a

hair transplant would be in order. So here are 10 factors to

guide you in order to come up with a successful hair

restoration procedure.

1. The Right Surgeon. The result of your hair transplant

would only be as good as the skill the surgeon has. This is

why when planning to get this procedure done, make sure

that you choose a certified and experienced surgeon. Check

on their previous works and ask around about what others

who might have had a hair transplant done under this

surgeon have to say about the quality of work.

2. Patient’s Remaining Natural Hair. The natural hair left

on you will determine the kind and amount of hair grafts

that you would have. If a patient still has a good amount of

hair left, which also has good quality then it is highly likely

that the implants will end up just as good.

3. The Right Placement. For your implants to look natural

when it grows, they should be positioned according to the

natural direction of hair and in such a way that it will fit the

profile of your face.

4. Pre-Operative Preparations. If you want to ensure that

your new implants will thrive better, nourish yourself by

eating healthy, especially on foods that will promote hair

growth. Protein can help you grow your hair better, while

vitamin A and C found in fruits and veggies will increase

the production of sebum which also encourages hair

growth.

6. Post-Operative Care. How you care for your hair grafts

after surgery also determines the end result. You should

follow every after care instructions and medications that

the surgeon prescribes. Avoid touching or scratching the

area to avoid disturbing or dislodging the grafts. You need

to be very patient and extra careful as you wait for your

hair to grow.

There is really no promise of perfection for any cosmetic

surgery, however when the signs are too profound take it

up right away with your surgeon. Although we hope and

expect for the best after a hair transplant procedure,

sometimes there are those unfortunate mishaps that

results to appalling outcomes. Fortunately with the

advancements in the industry, successful hair transplants

can attained to have a more natural and desirable

outcome.
