ASEP AT DUKE UNIVERSITY SCHOOL OF MEDICINE
By Elliott Bennett-Guerrero
Introduction
With extensive expertise in critical care medicine and general anesthesiology, Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero currently serves as the director of perioperative clinical research at the Duke Clinical Research Institute. Dr. Elliott Bennett-Guerrero balances this position with his role as a professor of anesthesiology at Duke University School of Medicine.
Among its many programs, the school offers students a third-year program called the Anesthesiology, Surgery, and Environmental Physiology Study Program (ASEP). The study program allows students to participate in research on molecular pharmacology, cardiovascular and respiratory physiology, environmental science, and neurobiology.
Duke University School of Medicine According to the school, ASEP is valuable for students
regardless of their final career goals, as the investigation of anesthesiology and critical care medicine delivers a rigorous application of research principles.
While in the program, students engage in “work in progress” meetings and collaborate with the program director to review laboratory progress. Students also meet regularly with course directors to discuss individual progress in the laboratories. When the year concludes, students are expected to present their work during individual meetings and publish an article in a peer-reviewed periodical.
