surgery.
What are the advantages ?
Better diagnosis of joint
problems

only be done with arthroscope
Early recovery & rehabilitation

Repair
Frozen shoulder
Biopsies
Diagnostic Theraputic/Definitive
EXAMPLES
ACL AVULSION
ACL and MCL
Conventional vs keyholeConventional ‘open’ surgery Keyhole surgery
1. Requires large incision – to illuminate whole area of damage, to allow surgeon to see clearly and to allow access of equipment
2. Significant blood loss
3. Painful wound
4. Higher risk of infection
5. Longer recovery period (several months)
1. Incision only the size of buttonhole to insert arthroscope – other incisions may be required for other instruments or to view other parts of joint
2. Arthroscope is a pencil-sized instrument, with small lens and light
3. Television camera attached to display image
4. Small dressing required and little or no pain medication
5. Shorter recovery (weeks)
