What findings suggest iron
deficiency as a cause of anemia?
What is best proof of iron deficiency
anemia?
Objectives
Introduction
• Iron deficiency (ID) is the most common nutritional
deficiency in children.
• Inadequate dietary iron, impaired iron absorption, or
bleeding, may be the cause.
• Iron deficiency anemia develops when body stores of
iron drop too low to support normal red blood cell
(RBC) production.
In history, some of the
following can be found:
Poor iron intake or impaired
absorption.
Any overt bleeding
History of recent
illness: could suggest GI bleeding
Infection
Best proof of iron deficiency anemia
• The most effective measurements for diagnosing Iron Deficiency Anemia are:
CBC PBS
Iron profile
In IDA
Test Result
Hemoglobin
Mean corpuscular volume (MCV)
Red cell distribution width (RDW)
Serum Iron
Serum ferritin
Transferrin Receptor
Total iron-binding capacity
Conclusion
• Iron deficiency anemia develops when body stores of
iron drop too low to support normal red blood cell
(RBC) production..
• Finding suggest iron deficiency are pallor, Koilonychia , Atrophic glossitis and Angular cheilitis.
• Best proof of Iron deficiency are CBC, Preipheral blood smear, and serum iron, total iron-binding capacity (TIBC), and serum ferritin.
