AMPUTATION OF TAIL IN CAT

Case Report
CASE DETAILS Name & Address : Smith , Nedumbuzha Case No : F7064 Date : 13-04-16 Animal : Tom cat Species : Feline Breed : Non descript Sex : Male Age : 1 year Body weight : 3 Kg
History
Reported that the animal met with an accident and not moving its tail.
Observation
Temperature : 102 F o
Mucous membrane : Pale Fracture of the tail could be detected, Tail Necrosis Wound on the middle of the tail No reflexes or perception noticed.
Treatment suggested
Tail docking
Site
Above the seat of injury
Preparation of site
Shaved the tail above the wounded area. Cleaned and dressed with povidone iodidne.
Anasthesia
Injection zokent 10 ml X 1 Sig 0.8 ml intra muscular Injection Xylodac 10 ml X 1
Sig 0.2 ml intra muscualr
Surgical technique
Put an U shaped incision on both dorsal and ventral aspect of the tail. Disarticulated the joint in between the Coccygeal vertebrae. Ligated the two lateral and one middle coccygeal artery. Put subcuticular suture with cat gut. Put vertical mattress suture with nylon on skin. Applied cotton with tincture benzoin. Bandaged
Post operative care
Roscalin Dry Syrup X1 Sig 0.5ml Bid for 5 days
Discussion
INDICATION Irreparable injury Malignant diseases Tail necrosis Tail paralysis
ANASTHESIA Sedation with ring block anaesthesia in recumbent position in dog and cat Epidural anaesthesia in standing or recumbent positing In bull or cow.
SITE Above the seat of injury Enough length to cover the vulva in cows and anus in Bulls is left if
possible .

Vessels 1.Middle coccygeal and Lateral coccygeal vessels
TECHNIQUE V shaped skin incision made on dorsal and ventral surface of
tail Raise two triangular flaps of skin The bases of flaps should corresponds to the intervertebral
space Ligated the arteries Disarticulated the joint Skin sutured with simple interrupted mattress sutures.
