Alzheimer's disease is a neurological disorder in which the death of brain cells leads to change in morphology and functionalities of the brain resulting in loss of memory, the problem in learning new things and making decisions along with behavioral changes.

The brain works as a communication network of whole body and onset of Alzheimer leads to disruption of this network which eventu-ally destroys neuron and neuronal synapses together. Majorly this disease is diagnosed in the people of age group 65 and older, however, 5 percents of the people from lower age group are also diagnosed with the same followed by more chronic exposure to the disease with time.

There are seven stages of Alzheimer’s disease where the condition gets worse with every progressive stage:

Stage 1 – Normal Alzheimer’sStage 2 – Normal aged forgetfulnessStage 3 – Mild cognitive impairmentStage 4 – Mild Alzheimer’sStage 5 – Moderate Alzheimer’s diseaseStage 6 – Moderately severe Alzheimer’s diseaseStage 7 – Severe Alzheimer’s disease

This disease is characterized by the formation of abnormal lesions around neuron in the brain along with the clumps of protein fragments, cellular material and insoluble fibers however it is not certain whether these lesions cause disease or are a byproduct of it.

It has been said that there is no cure available for Alzheimer and it can only be diagnosed after the patient’s death by autopsy. Currently, there are 5 FDA-approved drugs available that treats the symptoms of Alzheimer disease, however treating the underlying cause is not yet possible.

The researchers are working on the disease model for finding out the possible treatment available using regenerative medicine.

Alzheimer’s disease and Regenerative Medicine Over 40 million people suffer memory loss and other neurodegenerative symptoms due to Alzheimer’s disease and around 100 million peoples are supposed to be at risk. In an initiative led by Scott Noggle at The New York Stem Cell Foundation lab, the researchers created a disease model for the study of Alzheimer’s disease by reprogramming cells of early-onset patients into induced pluripotent stem cells on the cellular basis to create cholinergic basal forebrain neurons (the cells affected in Alzheimer’s). This process of creating disease induced pluripotent stem cell lines is known as Cellular reprogramming.

By these cells disease can be characterized at the cellular level. These cells demonstrate the features of the disease on a cellular level, creating a viable disease model that will be critical for drug discovery and testing.Initial results show that Alzheimer’s neurons produced more of the toxic form of beta-amyloid, the protein found in amyloid plaques than healthy neurons.The research and clinical trials are continuously going on for finding out the treatment for Alzheimer’s disease. As Regenerative medicine is a new concept there is a lot to be invented about them and their underlying mechanism as well as the standardized method of treatment. Regenerative medicine has so far proved to be a very potential source of treatment for those who wants to get rid of conventional treatment at an affordable cost.
