3D Simulation Technology for Breast Procedures
Women who decide to undergo a breast procedure are concerned about the possible
outcomes and always curious to know how the surgery could change their
appearance. The introduction of 3D imaging technology has ushered in a new phase
in cosmetic surgery. This innovative breakthrough technology allows the surgeon as
well as the patient to visualize 3-dimensional images of the outcome of a breast
surgery procedure before it is performed. So it serves as a tool that helps increase
patient understanding and interactions, which in turn, helps in improving post-
surgical satisfaction. Surgeons utilize this technology to measure, choose and
demonstrate the expected outcomes of various breast surgery procedures such as
Breast lift
Fat transfer
Breast augmentation
Composite breast augmentation
3D Breast Simulation Technologies
The most advanced and popular imaging systems used are:
Axis Three 3D – This system produces photo realistic 3D images of the
patient’s body, allowing the surgeon to visually communicate on the surgical
outcomes. During the pre-surgical consultation of an augmentation
procedure, this technology helps in the selection of the implant, in deciding
the position of the implant, and also in measuring tissue elasticity with Tissue
Behavior Simulation. Precise, accurate and high definition 3D images can be
generated with the patented Color Coded Triangulation (CCT™) within
seconds. This platform features XS-300 and XS-400 scanners that capture
high quality anatomically accurate images of the patient’s body characteristics
for the simulation. Axis Three can deliver up to six simulations at one time
which can be compared side by or rotated to view images from various
angles. This improves patient confidence and helps in the selection of a
suitable solution.
VECTRA 3D - The use of this advanced, high-resolution 3D breast
simulation system from Canfield Scientific, Inc. allows the plastic surgeon
to provide answers to patient queries on the outcome. The system takes a
number of images using multiple cameras simultaneously from different
angles. A computer-generated 3D model of the breast is created by the
SculptorTM software. This 3D model provides precise measurements and
details of the patient’s anatomy and can be viewed from a wide range of
angles. Vectra® software uses simulation tools which allow changing of the
shape, size and position of the mammary glands to achieve the desired
appearance. This helps patients overcome their uncertainty about the results
and allows the surgeon to develop a customized treatment plan.
Crisalix - This first web-based 3D simulator allows patients to try on different
breast implant sizes and types, project the related cup sizes and view them
from any desired angle. During the initial consultation a series of photos of
the body are taken and uploaded to the Crisalix application to create the
simulated results. Patients can also upload their own photos for the 3D
simulation which they can view along with the surgeon during the
consultation visit. It also helps in the evaluation of the volume required for a
fat transfer procedure. The imaging capabilities of the system help patients to
maintain realistic expectations and the surgeon to carry through effective pre-
operative planning.
In view of the many advantages that 3D imaging offers, women considering cosmetic
breast surgery would benefit from choosing a surgical practice that makes use of this
technology. This would enhance their confidence and provide them with a more
realistic idea about the results they can expect.
