“Technology gives us power, but it does not and cannot tell us how to

use that power. Thanks to technology, we can instantly

communicate across the world, but it still doesn't help us know what to

say.”

Jonathan Sacks

Make Goals and Keep Track of Your Spending

Choose a goal and add lots of detail to help you make your dreams come true such as a trip to see the Library of Congress in Washington, D.C., or saving for a comfortable retirement.

I tried out the application on my smartphone and the website using my personal checking account information and noticed much of my money went to my house and my automobile. I assume those categories would be in the top-two for many people here.

Page 179: What the Tech is That? 2014

How Could this Apply to a Librarian?

• With Mint.com, you can make your own categories to budget money. If you spend library money on anything from books to programming, you can keep track of exactly how much and where you spend the money in an easy-to-see format. A librarian could add a category for each genre of books and see how much money is being spent on each. Although this amount is probably tracked elsewhere, Mint.com provides an easy-to-read format that is accessed with only a few clicks!

• Librarians may also want to show this website and app to patrons to help them manage money for free. I am sure many patrons may find it very useful.

jumpdesktop.com

Page 188: What the Tech is That? 2014

Jump Desktop uses your Google account to log your computer and your iPad / iPhone / iPod Touch (your device) into Google's servers. When you

want to connect to your computer, Jump uses Google servers to locate the computer on the internet and setup a connection between the

computer and your device. Once a connection has been established, Jump then starts using the RDP or VNC protocol to communicate with

your computer.

Page 189: What the Tech is That? 2014

There are two devices involved. One device (let’s call it “The Server”) has the Jump Desktop application installed and running. This device is setup to accept connections and is the device that will be remotely controlled by the other device. The second device (let’s call it “The Client”) has the Jump Desktop Viewer application installed. This device requests a connection, and once established, will be presented with a display of the first device and can send control information. The RDP and the VNC protocols are both well-accepted protocols with the main difference being that RDP is created by Microsoft and intended primarily for PC’s. VNC is a more open platform protocol.

Are you like Bob ?• Multiple websites and

applications require user names and passwords with unique password criteria.

• At work alone, not counting my personal life, I have to keep track of multiple user names and passwords for email, WorkFlows, in-state library loan, out-of-state library loan, and much more!

• If you are like me or Bob there, you have trouble keeping track of all your user names and passwords in your workplace as well as at home.

I downloaded the free version of LastPass to see for myself how this add-on works and it is very simple. You must choose a master password. Your other passwords will autofill but the master password is an extra security precaution. Be sure to log out when you are done using the computer for maximum security. The login screen allows you to remember the password but also warns against choosing this option. The program’s icon will turn yellow and give you a warning if it detects the same password for multiple sites. It will also notify you that LastPass can generate a unique strong password. If you click on the red LastPass icon that will be located on your browser’s tool bar, a menu screen will appear with many options such as customizing the LastPass icons and notifications.

Using LastPass is Very Easy

LastPass saves your old passwords and all you have to do is click on the asterisk that will appear in the corner of every user name and password box. Select the correct account. Click it and your user name will appear as well as your password. You will never have to stress about passwords again!

Multiple Versions of LastPass

• Regular LastPass is free and you will be able to use it on multiple computers to manage passwords.

• Last Pass Premium is $12/year and gives you access to mobile apps for smartphones and tablets. With support for iOS, Android, Windows Phone, BlackBerry, and more, you’ll be able to manage your data on the road.

• LastPass Enterprise is designed for businesses. With it, a manager could see an automated report of the average password security score for the company and for each employee. A company could use the results to help identify employees with subpar passwords.

Kevin Achtzener:

“I write and speak on productivity, achievement, and visual mapping (mind maps). I focus on three things:

Mega Productivity - Relevant advice on Time Management and Personal Productivity, broken down into a 7-step system.

Visual Productivity - Using visual maps to do things like create new products, make usable SOPs, run meetings more effectively, eliminate your to-do list,

and get the handle on projects.Diamonds and Silver - 10 real-life ways to extract more

enjoyment and success out of your life.”

Kevin reviews 7 mind mapping apps or programs a year. Great Reviews. There is a lot of information on different apps to fit your specific needs.

Useful … A scanner in your pocket

• With Genius Scan, you can snap a picture of a receipt and save it. Once your library business trip is over, you have a .pdf document with multiple receipts that you can send to the accounting department instead of lots of pieces of paper that may get lost.

• If you need to send a signed document to a library office, you can snap a picture of it, export it by email and the signed contract will arrive at the desired location.

What is Available to Read and Watch?

Crowns next to a title indicate that only premium users can see it. It seems that there is a much more limited selection of manga chapters to read when compared to anime episodes to view. Even if you can’t read much of a particular manga, you can browse many categories and reading one chapter may give you an idea of what the story is like.

Page 278: What the Tech is That? 2014

Why Should You Care?

Many people enjoy anime and manga, especially young adults. If you think the audience will be there for a particular genre of anime and manga, you can sample various manga and anime to become familiar with what is out there and give you an idea of which titles to purchase for your library.
