ISSUE Alternative Hydrolysate Disposition
Context The Pentagon directed ACWA to develop an alternative approach
to hydrolysate treatment at both Pueblo and Blue Grass in the unlikely event that the on-site methods are incapable of such
treatment.
Initial Steps
• To initiate conforming with the Pentagon’s directiveACWA wishes to enlist the NRC, with input from the CAC’s from
both sites, to develop a set of CRITERIA against which any action that deviates from the current approach would be considered.
• ACWA is developing a Statement of Task that will provide specific areas the NRC will focus on in their report,
assuming they accept the request.
• ACWA plans to have the Pueblo and Blue Grass CAC’s review the Statement of Task prior to submitting it to the NRC.
• Once submitted it is anticipated that, due to time considerations, the Pueblo “Letter Report” will be delivered in
10-12 months while the Blue Grass Report will be a “Full Report” and delivered in approximately 18 months from initiation.
IMPORTANT POINTS
• This exercise does NOT imply any modifications by ACWA to the current on-site treatment approach of hydrolysate at
either Pueblo or Blue Grass
• Development of criteria against which a contingency plan would be implemented, with community input, is an appropriate
action and initiates fulfillments the Pentagon directive.
• Location of and type of treatment should alternative treatment be required are NOT part of this effort.
Proposed SWWG Actions
• The SWWG should review the Statement of Task once developed.
• The SWWG should engage in the development of the Criteria via ACWA and the NRC committee.
NOTE: NRC policy does not permit an opportunity to review and comment on the DRAFT Report prior to finalization and release.ACWA will be briefed two weeks prior to review for any factual
errors, but they can not comment on the Findings and Recommendations.
