Introduction
• DSK has started a project in November 2011 titled “Promoting environmental health for the urban poor (PEHUP)”
• Aim was to improve water, sanitation and hygiene in urban slums and low income communities.
• Targeted eradicating open defecation problem from the slum of Nagor Mollah in Mirpur 12
• Project expires in June 2017

DSK’s intervention
Project name: Promoting Environmental Health for the Urban poor (PEHUP)Desired Change: 100% open defecation free in Nagor Mollah slum within 6 years.Strategic partner: Wateraid, WASA.Primary Targets : Poor households with no proper sanitation and bathing system.
How did DSK mitigate the core problem
Community situation analysis, action planning.
Community based organization (CBO) formed
CBO’s contribution to the community. Training session as a part of hygiene
education. Formed 3 groups to improve hygiene
knowledge and practices given the hygiene support.
How did DSK mitigate the core problem
The three groups are: Adolescent group(15) Child group(14) Female group(80)
Messages delivered by the groups : 1)Safe water usage 2)Hygiene latrine 3)Washing before taking meal and after
using bathroom 4)food hygiene 5)Child/ Infant sanitation 6) Personal hygiene habits 7)Menstrual hygiene management 8) safe delivery 9)Water Safety Plant- i)usage ii)plan iii) process
The stakeholders
1) households with no sanitation system 2) CBO , Adolescent group, Child group Female group 3) local government ( Jubo league leader/ MP) 4)frontline workers (community mobilizers) 5) local business man 6)North city corporation and municipality
Condition after intervention of DSK
Wall written messages and water safety net Safety of girls ensured 81 water points and 27
cluster latrine installed Economical hand washing process implemented
Challenges , Community perception and any gap in project
Challenges while implanting- rejection of project approval from the local authority , long bureaucracy and lobbing to get the permission from WASA.
Community perception about the project is positive. Gaps 1)no schools in the community 2)no nearby hospitals 3)no safe water drinking facility
