ENERGY EMPLOYMENT ECONOMY

Cancellation of 204 coal blocks by Supreme Court presented a potential grave crisis of:

Shutdown of plants dependant on cancelled coal mines

Livelihood of thousands of workers endangered

Economic activity halts, NPAs mount

Crisis averted by focused action through implementation of transparent e-auction process in just four months

14

REJUVENATED ECONOMYPrevented NPAs, reduced import bill, generated momentum for ‘Make in India’ and raised resources for renewables & Ganga cleaning through coal cess.

Coal Mines (Special Provision) Act & Mines and Minerals (Development and Regulation) Amendment Act enacted to enable growth of coal sector and provide for the welfare of locals particularly tribals in the mineral bearing areas

Massive thrust to expedite projects in North East to overcome power shortages and increase prosperity. Investment of ` 9,865 Cr. for upgrading power systems in 8 North Eastern States (Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Meghalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland, Sikkim and Tripura)

For the first time, National State Power Ministers’ conference was held in Guwahati where Ministers & Officials from all over India converged in North East

24X7 power plans made for Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan. Action plans for other states at advanced stage of finalization

Entire Coal auction revenue will go to coal bearing states especially under developed states of Eastern India like Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Odisha, West Bengal etc.

33

Massive thrust on renewables to increase share of clean energy

More than 1 lakh solar pumps sanctioned in the past year

Solar pumps helped lakhs of farmers increase output, income and also provide drinking water.

Drinking water problem will be solved for more than 7.6 lakh families through solar pumps for drinking water

UNNAT CHULHA ABHIYAN provides improved cook stoves for clean cooking, thus saving the lives of our mothers and sisters. 3.5 lakh cook stoves were sanctioned last year.

Compulsory crushing and washing of coal to reduce ash transport by linking plants to their closest mines

o Massive thrust for ‘MAKE IN INDIA’ program: Orders of more than ` 100,000 crores being placed from NTPC, Coal India, Energy Efficiency Services Ltd., Powergrid Corporation etc. to kickstart the economy

o Domestic industry being encouraged to scale up and become more cost effective o 1000 MW of solar capacity to be setup by PSUs with solar cells made in India o Defence establishments will buy 300 MW solar plants o Similar initiatives across sectors

34

Swachh BharatThe PSUs under the three Ministries are committed to active involvement in this effort. As a first step, they are investing over

` 2,250 Cr. for over 1,25,000 toiletsseparately for boys and girls by 15th August, 2015 particularly in the needy states such as Bihar, Odisha, West Bengal, Jharkhand, Chhattisgarh, Andhra Pradesh and Rajasthan.

After construction, the PSUs will also maintain these toilets for a period of five years thus ensuring a complete sanitation programme.

Awareness is being created in local communities to improve over all sanitation.
