Where  we  were  

•  We  were  a  part  of  the  Department  of  Community  Safety,  but  are  now  a  

division  of  the  Department  of  Jus.ce  and  ACorney-­‐General.  

•  Eight  secure  correc.onal  centres  across  the  State.    Another  two  centres  

privately  managed  under  contract.  

•  Two  stand  alone  low  custody  centres.  

•  Proba.on  and  Parole  division  with  >32  district  offices  across  the  State.  

•  In  recent  years,  we  have  experienced  high  levels  of  prisoner  growth.  

•  Double  up  accommoda.on  for  prisoners  is  now  the  norm.        

 Workforce  of  4000,  of  which  2600  are  custodial  officers.    

•  LiCle  to  no  inves.ga.on  of  claims  

•  Employer’s  reports  generally  signed  off  suppor.ng  claims  

•  Non  work  related  injuries  were  stretching  our  capacity  for  RRTW  

•  Poor  rela.onship  with  WorkCover  

•  Disconnect  between  statutory  claims  and  common  law  claims  

•  Few  reviews  of  accepted  claims  by  the  regulator  

•  Workers  compensa.on  wages  top  up  in  place  for  custodial  workers  

•  Poor  outcomes  for  staff  –  incen.vized  not  to  work    

•  Poor  outcomes  for  management  and  the  organisa.on  

•  Escala.ng  workers  compensa.on  premium  

•  Paper  based  system  for  repor.ng  incidents        

Where  we  were  

  Two  new  procedures:    Management  of  work  related  injury/illness    Management  of  NON  work  related  injury/illness  

     

  Policy  shi]:    Cessa.on  of  top  ups  to  100%  of  NWE.    CCO  workers  compensa.on  claims  immediately    dropped  by  50%  and  have  con.nued  to  decrease.  

       

Integrated  Case  Management  

•  OHSE  Coordinator  in  each  centre.  

•  Network  of  RRTW  Coordinators.  

•  Principal  Adviser,  Injury  Management  in  the  HR  team.  

•  Legal  Officer  specialising  in  WHS  maCers.  

•  Legal  support  throughout  the  ICRP  process  through  to  common  

law.    

  New  Prac.ces:    Employers  reports  –  reviewed  and  cleared  centrally    OHSECs  provided  with  inves.ga.on  training        Improved  WorkCover  collabora.on  on  claims    90+  Day  claims  review  

   Ques.onable  claims  sent  to  the  Regulator        Integrated  Case  Review  Planning  –  ICRP  

   

       

• Regular,  integrated  team  mee.ng  

• Reviewing  WorkCover,  QSuper,  and  other  maCers  

ICRP  Mee.ng  

• Strategy  or  plan  developed  for  each  individual  

• Ac.ons  recorded  

• Followed  up  at  next  mee.ng  

Ac.ons  Iden.fied

While we wait to see what the Government's response will be,I can say with confidence that our corporate HR team are ready to support ourstaff should the need arise. Am preparing to roll out the Domestic & FamilyViolence awareness and training sessions in the near future.

Peter,    It's  a  good  reminder.  I  had  a  heart  aCack  last  year.  I  thought  I'd  share  so  people  are  more  aware.  ……..  I  was  very  lucky.  The  thing  is,  someone  reading  this  may  not  be  lucky  should  they  ignore  the  symptoms.    Its  beCer  to  call  the  ambulance  and  go  home  on  a  false  alarm  and  feel  a  liCle  foolish,  than  end  up  dead.  When  I  was  in  hospital  the  nurses  said,  only  50%  people  in  their  40's  make  it  because  they  choose  to  ignore  the  symptoms.  Hope  this  helps.    Anthony  At  Wolston  C.C.
